There is an undeniable air of romanticism around the Liverpool Academy. We love to talk about the fairy-tale trajectories of Trent Alexander-Arnold or Trey Nyoni the starlets who burst through the gates of Kirkby and straight onto the Anfield turf. But for every teenager who commands the Kop spotlight, there are dozens of talented youngsters whose development is hijacked by football’s most cruel adversary: injuries.
Liverpool are already planning for future transfer windows after a challenging summer. Head coach Andoni Iraola has inherited a squad with some clear gaps and areas of imbalance that will need addressing. The January transfer window could provide an opportunity to strengthen, while further changes may follow next summer.
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder James Balagizi has officially confirmed his departure from the club.
Balagizi joined Liverpool from Manchester City as an Under-11 and signed his first professional contract in 2020. In 2021/22, Balagizi was an unused substitute in two domestic cup ties under Jurgen Klopp and was loaned to Crawley Town of League Two for 2022/23. He made 16 appearances and scored three goals for Crawley before returning injured to Liverpool in January.
He joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal for 2023/24 after signing a new contract with Liverpool. It was a disappointing spell, however, that ended at the start of the January transfer window after just seven appearances.
Due to a hamstring injury sustained in December 2023, Balagizi was expected to remain at Liverpool for the second half of that season for rehab and games with the Under-21s. However, he returned to fitness sooner than expected and joined Kilmarnock on loan on 24 January. He struggled to make an impact, however, with all of his seven appearances coming as a substitute.
He remained at Liverpool’s Academy for 2024/25, but it was a frustrating injury-hit campaign limited to just five appearances—in which he did manage two goals. Balagizi spent the first part of the 2025/26 season on loan at Forest Green Rovers in the National League, but his spell was disrupted by a hamstring injury that ruled him out from late October onwards.
The midfielder was formally released by the club in the summer of 2026.
Despite being released, James Balagizi was part of the first group to report back to the AXA Training Centre in July 2026, working out in the gym alongside Rob Page’s squad.
The versatile midfielder had seen his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers cut short in January after suffering a hamstring injury, which explains his continued presence at Kirkby. Liverpool’s willingness to keep their medical facilities open to a released player to complete his rehabilitation speaks volumes about the culture preserved behind the scenes.
Balagizi Bids Farewell to Anfield
The 22-year-old took to his Instagram page to confirm his official exit with a moving statement reflecting on his decade-plus journey on Merseyside:
“From 11 to 22, it’s been an honour to represent this special club throughout a large part of my life.”
“I’m so grateful and fortunate for all of the experiences I’ve had over the years. A massive thank you to everyone who has been on this journey alongside me — teammates, coaches and staff.”
“This is a period I’ll always look back on fondly, with many ups, downs and lessons learned. Hopefully, I can use all of these experiences to help shape the rest of my professional career. I’d also like to thank everyone who has supported me in any capacity. YNWA.”
A Reminder of the High Standards at Kirkby
For those of us who follow the Academy closely, Balagizi was once considered one of the brightest attacking prospects in the system. Tall, technically gifted, and comfortable driving past players in central midfield, he possessed physical tools that made him look ready for senior football long before his peers.
His departure isn’t a surprise given his contract status, but it serves as a stark reminder of how ruthless top-level football can be. When hamstring injuries strike repeatedly at ages 19, 20, and 21, momentum is lost, loan spells stall, and the gap to the first team widen rapidly.
As Andoni Iraola evaluates his senior options ahead of January with transfer plans being drawn up to rebalance a squad still transitioning clear-outs at Academy level are part of the cycle.
