# Liverpool v FC Sion – The previous meeting

Liverpool face FC Sion of Switzerland in the Europa League this evening in their second game of the competition.

Tonight’s visitors have travelled to Anfield once before, that was in a Cup Winners’ Cup tie back in October 1996.

Liverpool won the first leg away in Sion 2-1, thanks to goals from Robbie Fowler and John Barnes.

The second leg at Anfield started poorly for the Reds. Goals from Frédéric Chassot in the 19th minute and Christophe Bonvin in the 23rd minute put the visitors ahead 2-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

A major shock looked to be on the cards, but Steve McManaman levelled the tie with his 28th-minute strike.

A rare goal from full-back Stig Inge Bjørnebye drew Liverpool level on the night and put them ahead in the tie. However, there was another twist when Chassot got his second goal to put Sion ahead on the night, and in the tie (thanks to the away goals rule).

Thankfully for manager Roy Evans, a neat goal by John Barnes was followed by a quick brace from Robbie Fowler to put Liverpool in the driver’s seat. A late Patrick Berger goal gave the scoreline a much healthier look than it might’ve had at one stage, and Liverpool ended up winning the game 6-3 and the tie 8-4 on aggregate.
