Goals from Ronald Araujo, Florian Wirtz and a brace from Alexis Mac Allister shifted the complexion of the game after a nervy opening spell. But it was Rio Ngumoha who caught Alan Shearer’s attention after an outstanding display on the right flank. ### Alan Shearer raves about Liverpool attacker Rio Ngumoha Ngumoha didn’t get his name on the scoresheet but recorded two assists, first for Araujo before the interval and then for Mac Allister in the second half. And Shearer feels his ability to take players on and beat them is worth it’s weight in gold. “He’s done that all night,” said Shearer via the [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/c6zxzxpw1584t). “He has been so positive and, without doubt, Liverpool’s best player. No other thought than go, and get at the defenders. “He could have gone down for a penalty and got his reward for not. He picks him out perfectly and Mac Allister follows his pass, gets in, and finishes it off.” What a performance from Rio, more to come! ## ‘Leader’ – Stephen Warnock showers high praise on Liverpool summer signing - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/leader-stephen-warnock-showers-high-praise-on-liverpool-summer-signing/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/leader-stephen-warnock-showers-high-praise-on-liverpool-summer-signing/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/leader-stephen-warnock-showers-high-praise-on-liverpool-summer-signing/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/leader-stephen-warnock-showers-high-praise-on-liverpool-summer-signing/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T20:09:13Z; updated: 2026-10-20T20:09:14Z **Liverpool and Villarreal played out an entertaining first half of UEFA Champions League football that ended 2-2 at Anfield.** After Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona put the visitors 2-0 up, the Reds struck back through Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo to restore parity. Araujo scored his second goal of the season right at the stroke of halftime as he guided a close-range header home after a fantastic cross from Rio Ngumoha. And Stephen Warnock feels the Uruguayan international is exactly the kind of player every manager loves as he works his socks off for his team. ### Stephen Warnock lauds Liverpool loanee Ronald Araujo “Ronald Araujo is one of those players you absolutely need in your team,” said Warnock via the BBC. “He’s someone who will put his body on the line, someone who plays with passion, someone who is a leader.” Araujo played quite well at right back as he showed his experience defensively and scored an important equaliser. > 🚨 New right-back alert: Ryan Gravenberch. > > — AS (@Anfield\_Sector) [October 20, 2026](https://x.com/Anfield_Sector/status/2112635768317296742?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) Strangely, he was subbed at the interval, with Ryan Gravenberch slotting in at right-back, but he made a defining contribution with what was his last kick of the game. And his celebration didn’t go unnoticed either as he jumped over the advertisement boards to celebrate with the Anfield faithful. ## ‘Absolute nightmare’ – Alan Shearer tears into Liverpool player for his mistake vs Villarreal - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/absolute-nightmare-alan-shearer-tears-into-liverpool-player-for-his-mistake-vs-villarreal/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/absolute-nightmare-alan-shearer-tears-into-liverpool-player-for-his-mistake-vs-villarreal/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/absolute-nightmare-alan-shearer-tears-into-liverpool-player-for-his-mistake-vs-villarreal/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/absolute-nightmare-alan-shearer-tears-into-liverpool-player-for-his-mistake-vs-villarreal/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T19:29:10Z; updated: 2026-10-20T19:29:11Z **Liverpool are currently 1-0 down against Villarreal after a terrible start to the first half at Anfield.** Georges Mikautadze scored the solitary goal of the game in the opening exchanges after what was a rare moment of madness from captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch international’s tame header back to Alisson Becker was intercepted by Mikautadze, who did the rest from close range. And Alan Shearer feels the Liverpool captain endured a nightmare start to the game, putting the Reds in the back seat. ### Alan Shearer slams Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk “Liverpool’s back four made an absolute mess of it after 30 or 40 seconds, and an absolute nightmare from Van Dijk,” said Shearer via the [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/c6zxzxpw1584t). “A clear header, you can see what he’s trying to do. It wasn’t a great clearance from Alisson, and then the ball gets played over the top by \[Villarreal\], and really under no pressure at all, Van Dijk just tries to guide it back to Alisson and gets it all wrong. > Goal. However, they have enough time to turn it around and could turn to their game to influence proceedings in the second half. ## Liverpool’s confirmed starting XI for Villarreal clash as Andoni Iraola rings in the changes - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-confirmed-starting-xi-for-villarreal-clash-as-andoni-iraola-rings-in-the-changes/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-confirmed-starting-xi-for-villarreal-clash-as-andoni-iraola-rings-in-the-changes/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-confirmed-starting-xi-for-villarreal-clash-as-andoni-iraola-rings-in-the-changes/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-confirmed-starting-xi-for-villarreal-clash-as-andoni-iraola-rings-in-the-changes/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T17:56:23Z; updated: 2026-10-20T17:56:24Z **Andoni Iraola has made a raft of changes as Liverpool prepare to host Villarreal in a UEFA Champions League group phase clash at Anfield.** With games coming thick and fast, the Spaniard has opted to go for fresh legs as the Reds continue to deal with their fair share of injury concerns. Victor Munoz didn’t train ahead of the game and has been left out of the matchday squad with a suspected injury, while Dom Szoboszlai also misses out as expected. In defence, Kostas Tsimikas comes into the team in place of Milos Kerkez. As expected, Ryan Gravenberch gets a start alongside Alexis Mac Allister, but it is Trey Nyoni in the No.10 role for Liverpool today over Florian Wirtz. > Your Reds to take on Villarreal in the [#UCL](https://x.com/hashtag/UCL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)! 🔴💫 [pic.twitter.com/tlQNFZVMBv](https://t.co/tlQNFZVMBv) > > — Liverpool FC (@LFC) [October 20, 2026](https://x.com/LFC/status/2112601028776636692?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) Cody Gakpo returns to the team in attack and is joined by Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas in attack, with Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak dropping to the bench. There is also a place on the bench for academy midfielder Michael Laffey, while Jayden Danns is also part of the matchday squad. Liverpool will look to maintain their perfect record in the UEFA Champions League this season but have made a lot of changes to their squad. That said, they have a lot of big hitters on the bench, so they can be called upon in the second half if they are chasing the game. ## Liverpool dealt massive injury blow just before Villarreal clash - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/injury-news/liverpool-dealt-massive-injury-blow-just-before-villarreal-clash/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/injury-news/liverpool-dealt-massive-injury-blow-just-before-villarreal-clash/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/injury-news/liverpool-dealt-massive-injury-blow-just-before-villarreal-clash/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/injury-news/liverpool-dealt-massive-injury-blow-just-before-villarreal-clash/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T15:21:31Z; updated: 2026-10-20T15:21:32Z **Liverpool and Villarreal will lock horns in a UEFA Champions League group phase clash at Anfield later today.** The Reds have already beaten Atletico Madrid and LASK in the competition so far and will look to maintain their perfect run with another victory. Andoni Iraola’s side are coming on the back of a 2-1 comeback win against Brentford and have a handful of injury concerns to deal with. And now, if reports are to be believed, they could be without Victor Munoz for the clash against the La Liga side. ### Liverpool facing Victor Munoz injury blow Munoz has been in fine form for Liverpool this season and scored a fantastic goal at the Gtech Community Stadium. And now, as relayed by [This Is Anfield](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2026/10/victor-munoz-absent-liverpool-team-hotel-villarreal/), he wasn’t spotted with the rest of his teammates at the Titanic Hotel, which is a sign that he won’t be part of the matchday squad today. If Munoz misses out, the likes of Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola are expected to start in attack, while Cody Gakpo could replace Alexander Isak up front if the Swede is given a breather. ## ‘One of the best’ – Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to extend attacker’s contract - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/one-of-the-best-jamie-carragher-urges-liverpool-to-extend-attackers-contract/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/one-of-the-best-jamie-carragher-urges-liverpool-to-extend-attackers-contract/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/one-of-the-best-jamie-carragher-urges-liverpool-to-extend-attackers-contract/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/one-of-the-best-jamie-carragher-urges-liverpool-to-extend-attackers-contract/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T09:23:17Z; updated: 2026-10-20T09:23:18Z **Liverpool’s squad is hardly perfect, but in terms of their attack, it goes without saying that they have a lot of firepower.** Hugo Ekitike is injured and Federico Chiesa is seemingly out of favour, but despite that, Andoni Iraola can call upon the likes of Alexander Isak, Lewis Koumas, Victor Munoz, Rio Ngumoha, Cody Gakpo and Bradley Barcola. The Reds have been productive in the final third over the past couple of games, scoring eight goals. One player who has continued to make massive strides this season is Ngumoha, who came off the bench and made a massive impression vs Brentford. And Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool must do whatever it takes to tie him down to a new deal. ### Jamie Carragher wants Rio Ngumoha to stay at Liverpool The Reds are already in talks with the youngster and his agents over a new deal and are expected to reach an agreement soon. Earlier this week, Ngumoha spoke about how happy he is at Liverpool, which is another sign that he will put pen to paper shortly. And Carragher feels he is one of the best young attackers in the world, so he should continue his development at Anfield. ["It\'s a brilliant week for Liverpool" | Jamie Carragher on Iraola\'s impact, Florian Wirtz and more (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/gJk4oJM9Dsg?feature=oembed) “Rio Ngumoha is one of the best young players in the country,” said Carragher via Sky Sports. “He’s already in the England squad. Liverpool have to tie him down. He made a huge difference when he came on against Brentford. “He said he’s close to signing a new contract, so hopefully they will get pen to paper very shortly.” Ngumoha is yet to score this season and will look to make a mark when Liverpool take on Villarreal later today. ## ‘Outstanding’ – Steven Gerrard showers high praise on ‘fantastic’ Liverpool attacker - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/outstanding-steven-gerrard-showers-high-praise-on-fantastic-liverpool-attacker/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/outstanding-steven-gerrard-showers-high-praise-on-fantastic-liverpool-attacker/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/outstanding-steven-gerrard-showers-high-praise-on-fantastic-liverpool-attacker/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/outstanding-steven-gerrard-showers-high-praise-on-fantastic-liverpool-attacker/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T09:13:40Z; updated: 2026-10-20T09:13:41Z **Liverpool are slowly clicking into gear under Andoni Iraola and will look to make it three wins on the bounce when they take on Villarreal later today.** After dispatching LASK in midweek, the Reds came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 in what turned out to be an eventful game of football. Victor Munoz scored the equaliser for Liverpool on the night as he showed his class once again for his new club. The Spaniard scored his second Premier League goal for the Reds and played around 30 minutes of football as a right-back after an injury to Jeremie Frimpong. And Steven Gerrard feels Munoz is yet to get the credit he deserves after his strong start to life at Anfield. ### Steven Gerrard hails Liverpool attacker Victor Munoz “He’s been fantastic for Liverpool,” said Gerrard via The Overlap. > "He hasn't had enough credit!" 👏\ > \ > Steven Gerrard speaks very highly of Víctor Muñoz 🔥\ > \ > Watch the latest Overlap Daily episode now on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts 🙌⚽️ [pic.twitter.com/4LSzHCHWIW](https://t.co/4LSzHCHWIW) > > — Overlap Daily (@ThatsFootballTV) [October 20, 2026](https://x.com/ThatsFootballTV/status/2112446377384988732?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) “He hasn’t had enough praise or credit, maybe because a lot of people are talking about Wirtz and Barcola. But he came in for €40m and has been outstanding, a breath of fresh air.” All of Liverpool’s new signings have already made an impact. However, Gerrard is right in claiming that Munoz is yet to get the credit he deserves as he has taken to Premier League football like a duck to water. Long may it continue! ## ‘Great start’ – Jamie Carragher raves about ‘massively important’ Liverpool attacker - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/great-start-jamie-carragher-raves-about-massively-important-liverpool-attacker/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/great-start-jamie-carragher-raves-about-massively-important-liverpool-attacker/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/great-start-jamie-carragher-raves-about-massively-important-liverpool-attacker/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/great-start-jamie-carragher-raves-about-massively-important-liverpool-attacker/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T07:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-20T07:00:00Z **Liverpool are slowly clicking into gear under Andoni Iraola and will look to string together a run of wins in all competitions.** After beating LASK and Brentford, the Reds take on Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League later today as they aim to maintain their perfect record in the competition. Last week, Iraola’s side did well to come from behind to beat Brentford away from home thanks to goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak. And Jamie Carragher believes the Swedish international is slowly showing signs of replicating his form at Newcastle United. ### Jamie Carragher lauds Liverpool striker Alexander Isak Isak is yet to score in the UEFA Champions League this season, but in the Premier League, he already has five goals to his name. The Swede provided the telling moment of the game vs Brentford with a fantastic close-range finish in the second half after latching on to a pass from Bradley Barcola. And Carragher believes his goals could prove to be invaluable for Liverpool this season as they don’t have another reliable goalscorer in the team. When asked how important Isak could be this season, Carragher said via Sky Sports: “Massively important because Liverpool are not a great goal-scoring team right now. “They have only scored nine goals in seven Premier League games. Isak has got five in six games, so he’s made a great start. ["It\'s a brilliant week for Liverpool" | Jamie Carragher on Iraola\'s impact, Florian Wirtz and more (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/gJk4oJM9Dsg?feature=oembed) “We’ve probably still not seen the full version of Isak that we saw at Newcastle, but I think that will come with more games and repetition of training sessions with Andoni Iraola. “Maybe we’ll see the best of him in the second half of the season. He’s getting goals and he needs to, because there aren’t too many players around him getting goals for Liverpool.” Isak played 78 minutes last weekend after returning from an injury, so it remains to be seen if he gets a breather later tonight vs Villarreal. ## ‘Special’ – Jamie Carragher blown away by what Liverpool player did vs Brentford - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/special-jamie-carragher-blown-away-by-what-liverpool-player-did-vs-brentford/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/special-jamie-carragher-blown-away-by-what-liverpool-player-did-vs-brentford/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/special-jamie-carragher-blown-away-by-what-liverpool-player-did-vs-brentford/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/special-jamie-carragher-blown-away-by-what-liverpool-player-did-vs-brentford/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T06:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-20T06:00:00Z **Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium last week.** After Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener, Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak struck in the second half to turn the tide in the Reds’ favour. After Brentford went down to ten men after Vitaly Janelt’s red card, Florian Wirtz really came into his own and delivered a fantastic performance. The German international also played a big part in Munoz’s equaliser, providing the assist for the goal. And Jamie Carragher, who has been so critical of Wirtz in recent weeks, has signed him out for special praise. ### Jamie Carragher lauds Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz “Lots of players can scan, it’s a big part of the game now,” said Carragher via Sky Sports. “But you can scan before the ball is on its way to you because you know you’re going to get that pass. “What makes this extra special is the ball is now passed, he checks his right shoulder, then his left shoulder, and the ball is on him. ["It\'s a brilliant week for Liverpool" | Jamie Carragher on Iraola\'s impact, Florian Wirtz and more (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/gJk4oJM9Dsg?feature=oembed) “The scanning and the first touch is the assist! Not so much the pass – it’s a simple pass for Wirtz. The scanning and the actual touch deserve the assist, not the actual pass.” Wirtz has really come into his own over the past two games and will look to carry on in the same vein tonight vs Villarreal. ## Predicted Liverpool XI for UEFA Champions League clash vs Villarreal - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/predicted-liverpool-xi-for-uefa-champions-league-clash-vs-villarreal/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/predicted-liverpool-xi-for-uefa-champions-league-clash-vs-villarreal/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/predicted-liverpool-xi-for-uefa-champions-league-clash-vs-villarreal/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/predicted-liverpool-xi-for-uefa-champions-league-clash-vs-villarreal/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-20T05:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-20T05:00:00Z **Liverpool will take on Villarreal later today as they aim to maintain their perfect record in the UEFA Champions League group phase.** The Reds have already beaten Atletico Madrid and LASK and will look to produce another memorable European night under the lights at Anfield. However, they do have a few injury concerns ahead of the game. Jeremie Frimpong suffered an injury vs Brentford and was substituted six minutes after coming on, so he won’t be available for this game. Dom Szoboszlai suffered a similar fate, but his injury isn’t serious, so it remains to be seen if he’s risked for this one. > Alexander Isak’s goals this season. 🇸🇪🔥 [pic.twitter.com/wLkS7PDAsl](https://t.co/wLkS7PDAsl) > > — AS (@Anfield\_Sector) [October 19, 2026](https://x.com/Anfield_Sector/status/2112240116525891724?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) Cody Gakpo returned to the matchday squad vs Brentford but didn’t feature, so he is likely to start in attack to provide some fresh legs for Andoni Iraola. Alexander Isak played 78 minutes on his injury return and scored the winner last week. However, Liverpool will want to err on the side of caution with him, giving Lewis Koumas another opportunity to impress. Ryan Gravenberch is another player who is expected to start after missing the game against Brentford due to a suspension. **Predicted Liverpool lineup vs Villarreal:** Alisson Becker; Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez; Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch; Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola; Cody Gakpo ## ‘Intense’ – Fabrizio Romano provides double Liverpool transfer update - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/transfers/intense-fabrizio-romano-provides-double-liverpool-transfer-update/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/transfers/intense-fabrizio-romano-provides-double-liverpool-transfer-update/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/transfers/intense-fabrizio-romano-provides-double-liverpool-transfer-update/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/transfers/intense-fabrizio-romano-provides-double-liverpool-transfer-update/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T16:41:03Z; updated: 2026-10-19T16:41:04Z **Liverpool are in an interesting position under Andoni Iraola currently.** They are slowly clicking into gear under their new manager, while Julian Ward has replaced Richard Hughes as sporting director in another important change behind the scenes. The Reds are expected to be active in the upcoming transfer windows as they still have a lot of work to do to fine-tune their squad, particularly in midfield. And now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed whether Liverpool will make a move for Lamine Camara or Alex Scott in 2027. ### Lamine Camara and Alex Scott wanted by Liverpool Interest in both players is well documented, but Romano says Liverpool are yet to decide whether they will act decisively in January. “Liverpool admire Lamine Camara, but it remains to be seen whether they enter the midfield market in January,” said Romano. “Alex Scott is also admired, with several other midfielders being scouted and followed. > \[🟢\] NEW: Liverpool admire Lamine Camara, but it remains to be seen whether they enter the midfield market in January. Whether a move comes in January or the summer remains to be seen.” Over the years, the Reds haven’t refrained from spending in January, with the likes of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz joining the club midway through the season in recent seasons, among others. If suitable market opportunities come by, Liverpool will be there to react. That said, it’s hard to find value for money in January, so it appears as if they will play it by ear. ## ‘Big moment’ – Steven Gerrard predicts Liverpool attacker to explode soon - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/big-moment-steven-gerrard-predicts-liverpool-attacker-to-explode-soon/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/big-moment-steven-gerrard-predicts-liverpool-attacker-to-explode-soon/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/big-moment-steven-gerrard-predicts-liverpool-attacker-to-explode-soon/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/big-moment-steven-gerrard-predicts-liverpool-attacker-to-explode-soon/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T16:18:00Z; updated: 2026-10-19T16:18:02Z **After a sobering 3-0 defeat vs Manchester City, Liverpool have bounced back in style with important victories vs LASK and Brentford.** Over the past two games, Florian Wirtz has come to life for Liverpool, recording an assist apiece in each game. Another player who finally got his way is Bradley Barcola, as he scored a fantastic hat-trick vs LASK and topped it off with an assist vs Brentford. And Steven Gerrard feels the French international is close to exploding at Anfield after finally having a bit of lift-off in terms of his end product. ### Steven Gerrard tips Bradley Barcola to succeed at Liverpool “I think Bradley has come to Liverpool a bit undercooked in terms of game time,” said Gerrard via The Overlap. “He didn’t have the best pre-season because he didn’t play many minutes. Training is important, but it’s the game minutes that get you close to your top level. “I think you’re seeing a player getting close to his level. He’s so fast. He’s so dangerous. He can take players on. He can create and score.” “The hat-trick against LASK was really important for him personally. Confidence, belief, feeling that you’ve actually arrived at Liverpool after a big price tag and a big summer move. The one-v-one was a big moment for him. That would have been beautiful.” Barcola missed a couple of glorious chances to score at the Gtech Community Stadium, but none of it matters now as he played his part in the win and also helped out defensively. He has four goal contributions now in his last two games and will look to build on it when Liverpool take on Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League tomorrow. ## Andoni Iraola and Steven Gerrard say the same thing about Florian Wirtz at Liverpool - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/andoni-iraola-and-steven-gerrard-say-the-same-thing-about-florian-wirtz-at-liverpool/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/andoni-iraola-and-steven-gerrard-say-the-same-thing-about-florian-wirtz-at-liverpool/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/andoni-iraola-and-steven-gerrard-say-the-same-thing-about-florian-wirtz-at-liverpool/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/andoni-iraola-and-steven-gerrard-say-the-same-thing-about-florian-wirtz-at-liverpool/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T16:11:05Z; updated: 2026-10-19T16:11:06Z **Over the course of the 2026-27 campaign, a lot has been said about Florian Wirtz and his Liverpool career so far.** The German international has only shown flashes of his potential at Anfield since his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, leading to suggestions that he should be dropped from the team. However, in recent weeks, Wirtz appears to have found his feet after commanding displays vs LASK in the UEFA Champions League and Brentford in the Premier League. And now, Andoni Iraola has singled him out for special praise, while former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has once again given him a glowing endorsement. ### Florian Wirtz gets ringing Liverpool endorsement Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Iraola praised the 23-year-old for his recent displays, adding that credit should be given when it’s due. “I think he’s coming in from two very good games, LASK and Brentford; he helped a lot in and out of possession. [Champions League Press Conference: Liverpool vs Villarreal | Andoni Iraola & Ronald Araujo (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/PrdJKdbG2Ug?feature=oembed) “I hope we can keep him there. We analyse and scrutinise everything but when he does well, it’s fair to say.” Gerrard appeared to echo those claims. The former Liverpool captain believes Wirtz needs to be allowed to play his way through his Liverpool rut as opposed to being frozen out of the team and scrutinised. “As soon as they start getting a bit of criticism, from whoever starts it, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and everyone wants to really dramatise it and serialise it. “I think Florian Wirtz has to perform better and give more,” said Gerrard via The Overlap. “I did say that and I think he has underperformed in more than enough games. It took him a lot of time to get up to speed with the Premier League and he has been frustrating at times. “The easy thing is to try and kill him and try to move him on and wish him well. You just need to stop and think: how can you fix it?” “If you’re the manager of Liverpool, you want Wirtz to be shining. You need him contributing goals and assists. That’s what the fans want. [No Sympathy for Martinez, Faith In Wirtz & Koumas Breaks Gerrard’s Record! | Overlap Daily (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/xhMT9JwrN_M?feature=oembed) “I’ve seen enough throughout his career and flashes in a Liverpool shirt to think that he can play through this and come out the other side. “The last two performances against LASK and Brentford, he’s put two performances together. He’s contributed to the win in both.” “Don’t give up on him. This is not just Florian Wirtz. I’m talking about any young kid who has a dip in form or who is finding it hard to cope with a price tag. “Let’s work with him. Let’s try and help him, let’s support him. Let’s hope he’s on an upward curve now for more consistent performances.” Safe to say Gerrard and Iraola are certainly on the same page…. ## ‘New injury’ – Andoni Iraola confirms double Liverpool blow ahead of Villarreal clash - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/new-injury-andoni-iraola-confirms-double-liverpool-blow-ahead-of-villarreal-clash/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/new-injury-andoni-iraola-confirms-double-liverpool-blow-ahead-of-villarreal-clash/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/new-injury-andoni-iraola-confirms-double-liverpool-blow-ahead-of-villarreal-clash/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/new-injury-andoni-iraola-confirms-double-liverpool-blow-ahead-of-villarreal-clash/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T15:58:43Z; updated: 2026-10-19T15:58:44Z **Liverpool are set to take on Villarreal tomorrow in their third UEFA Champions League group phase game of the new season.** The Reds have six points from two games so far and will look to continue their perfect run in the competition with a home win. Ahead of the game, Andoni Iraola and Ronald Araujo spoke to the media and touched upon a wide range of topics. And the Spaniard confirmed that the Reds will be without Jeremie Frimpong, while Dom Szoboszlai faces a race against time to prove his fitness. ### Liverpool dealing with injury issues Frimpong came on as a half-time substitute for Araujo vs Brentford but was substituted within six minutes with a muscle injury. “Jeremie Frimpong has a new injury and we will have to wait until he recovers,” said Iraola ahead of the game. “It’s going to be difficult before the break, but we will try. As for Szoboszlai, he missed two games due to an overload he suffered during the previous international break. [Champions League Press Conference: Liverpool vs Villarreal | Andoni Iraola & Ronald Araujo (embedded)](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/PrdJKdbG2Ug?feature=oembed) However, the Hungarian midfielder started vs Brentford but was subbed off early in the first half for Trey Nyoni after failing to shake off his injury. “Dom is different,” said Iraola when asked about Szoboszlai. “It’s not a new one; it’s the same place as last week. He hasn’t worsened it, but we will have to be a little bit more patient until he recovers fully. “It’s not like he has to wait a long time to come back. He’s more or less in the same situation as last week. “I appreciate that he wanted to be available for a very difficult, physical game. To want to play speaks very well of him.” Frimpong has definitely been ruled out and Liverpool will err on the side of caution with Szoboszlai as they have a few options in the centre of the park. ## Liverpool transfer news as Julian Ward’s ‘utmost priority’ emerges - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-julian-wards-utmost-priority-emerges/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-julian-wards-utmost-priority-emerges/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-julian-wards-utmost-priority-emerges/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-julian-wards-utmost-priority-emerges/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T10:11:21Z; updated: 2026-10-19T10:11:22Z **Julian Ward has officially taken over as Liverpool’s sporting director after Richard Hughes’ departure to Al-Hilal.** The Englishman knows the club inside out and will waste no time in getting to work as the Reds still have a few issues to address. Liverpool will remain on the lookout for potential reinforcements in the upcoming transfer windows to bolster Andoni Iraola’s squad. However, [TEAMtalk](https://www.teamtalk.com/liverpool/rio-ngumoha-reaches-massive-decision-anfield-future-reveals-all-contract-talks) sources confirm that Ward’s biggest priority at Liverpool is to tie down Rio Ngumoha to a new contract. ### Liverpool desperate to keep Rio Ngumoha The youngster is now firmly a first-team option after bursting onto the scene under Arne Slot and has also been capped by England. Ngumoha is in talks with Liverpool over a new deal and is relaxed about his future. However, according to the aforementioned source, Ward wants to ensure his long-term future lies at Anfield, which will be his first order of business in his new role. > Rio Ngumoha on whether he has a preferred wing:\ > \ > “No, not anymore to be fair. Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak got the goals on the night for Liverpool after Keane Lewis-Potter gave the home side the lead in the first half. And Van Dijk has singled out Munoz and Florian Wirtz for special praise after the game. ### Virgil van Dijk lauds Liverpool duo A lot has been said about Wirtz recently, but the German produced one of his finest displays of the season as he provided the assist for Munoz’s goal. The Spaniard, for his part, capped off a fighting display with a fantastic equaliser, which was his second Premier League goal since his move from Osasuna in the summer. “I think Flo is doing well,” said Van Dijk via The Liverpool Echo after the game. “He is always going to be in the spotlight playing for Liverpool – one of the biggest clubs in the world. “It is just about him showing each and every game that he is a Liverpool player. > Florian Wirtz leads the league in chances created this season (20) 🇩🇪🌟 [pic.twitter.com/QypjLdpSNC](https://t.co/QypjLdpSNC) > > — LFC Transfer Room (@LFCTransferRoom) [October 17, 2026](https://x.com/LFCTransferRoom/status/2111495621576462460?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) “I think \[Munoz\] was very good. But I think he did well and so did the rest of the team. “He is very fast but he is a very hard-working player who has settled in well and it is down to him to keep going.” Both players will once again be in the thick of the action as the Reds prepare to take on Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League tomorrow. ## ‘Adapt’ – Rio Ngumoha opens up on healthy competition with Liverpool summer signing - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/adapt-rio-ngumoha-opens-up-on-healthy-competition-with-liverpool-summer-signing/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/adapt-rio-ngumoha-opens-up-on-healthy-competition-with-liverpool-summer-signing/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/adapt-rio-ngumoha-opens-up-on-healthy-competition-with-liverpool-summer-signing/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/adapt-rio-ngumoha-opens-up-on-healthy-competition-with-liverpool-summer-signing/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T08:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-19T08:00:00Z **Since making his debut under Arne Slot last season, Rio Ngumoha has been a key player for Liverpool.** His eye-catching displays at Anfield also led to a senior England cap as Thomas Tuchel showed his faith in him. This season, however, Ngumoha has had to bide his time after Bradley Barcola’s headline move to Liverpool. But the Englishman feels healthy competition is welcome as long as everyone involved is being given a chance to impress. ### Ngumoha relishing Barcola competition at Anfield “Yeah, I definitely had to adapt,” said Ngumoha via [The Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/its-agent-now-rio-ngumoha-34781015#google_vignette) when asked about Barcola’s arrival. “The good thing about all of us is we can all play on both the left and the right side.” > Rio Ngumoha on whether he has a preferred wing:\ > \ > “No, not anymore to be fair. It is all about the team with us, so that is good.” With Barcola predominantly stationed as a left-winger, Ngumoha has been deployed on the right flank a handful of times. And it’s safe to say the youngster is adapting well to his new role, which has helped him add another dimension to his game. ## ‘Not too sure’ – Liverpool attacker makes fresh claim on his future - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/not-too-sure-liverpool-attacker-makes-fresh-claim-on-his-future/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/not-too-sure-liverpool-attacker-makes-fresh-claim-on-his-future/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/not-too-sure-liverpool-attacker-makes-fresh-claim-on-his-future/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/not-too-sure-liverpool-attacker-makes-fresh-claim-on-his-future/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T07:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-19T07:00:00Z **Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.** After Keane Lewis-Potter gave the home side the lead, goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak turned the tide in the Reds’ favour. Judging by his comments, he is letting his football do the talking while his agent handles contract talks with the club, which is exactly how things need to be. That said, let’s hope the two parties come to an agreement and sign on the dotted line soon as he is clearly one of the brightest attacking talents in world football. ## Liverpool transfer news as €90m Alex Scott alternative emerges - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-e90m-alex-scott-alternative-emerges/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-e90m-alex-scott-alternative-emerges/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-e90m-alex-scott-alternative-emerges/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-e90m-alex-scott-alternative-emerges/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T06:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-19T06:00:00Z **Liverpool are expected to be active in the upcoming transfer windows as Andoni Iraola aims to fine-tune his squad.** New sporting director Julian Ward has his work cut out for him after replacing Richard Hughes in the role earlier this year. The Reds need a body or two in midfield and were linked with a handful of names in the summer transfer window. Liverpool’s interest in Alex Scott is well documented, with the England international expected to move on in 2027. However, Iraola’s side aren’t putting all their eggs in the Scott basket and appear to be casting their net wider. ### Liverpool retain interest in Felix Nmecha [Caught Offside](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2026/10/17/liverpool-considering-felix-nmecha-transfer-from-dortmund/) report that Liverpool maintain an interest in Felix Nmecha, who is a key player for Borussia Dortmund and Germany. However, Nmecha isn’t expected to come cheap, with Dortmund valuing him at at least €90m. Iraola is expected to sign at least one midfielder in 2027. And judging by all the reporting so far, Scott is a serious target for the club, while others such as Nmecha, Manu Kone and Lamine Camara are also among the candidates being monitored. ## ‘Top’ – Rio Ngumoha feels Liverpool teammate is absolutely ‘elite’ - Page: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/top-rio-ngumoha-feels-liverpool-teammate-is-absolutely-elite/](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/top-rio-ngumoha-feels-liverpool-teammate-is-absolutely-elite/) - Markdown: [https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/top-rio-ngumoha-feels-liverpool-teammate-is-absolutely-elite/index.md](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/top-rio-ngumoha-feels-liverpool-teammate-is-absolutely-elite/index.md) - Published: 2026-10-19T05:00:00Z; updated: 2026-10-19T05:00:00Z **Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Brentford in what turned out to be a memorable away day for Andoni Iraola.** Keith Andrews’s side took the lead through Keane Lewis-Potter, who thundered home a close-range header after a fantastic cross from Michael Kayode.
