Dirk Kuyt Haunts Liverpool as Fenerbahçe Mount Dramatic Champions League Comeback

Andoni Iraola

When Dirk Kuyt was working himself into the ground across 285 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, he earned total devotion from the Kop for his habit of snatching dramatic late victories. On a chaotic Wednesday night in Istanbul, the Dutchman delivered another unscripted comeback only this time, it left his beloved former club in absolute pieces.

By overseeing Fenerbahçe’s thrilling 3-2 victory at the Chobani Stadyumu, Kuyt became the first former Liverpool player to defeat the Reds as a manager since Graeme Souness did so with Newcastle United back in March 2005.

It represented a chastening, deeply alarming night for Andoni Iraola’s side, who threw away a lead twice in the space of 20 minutes to inflict a second damaging loss in just four days.

Liverpool actually made the initial breakthrough on 25 minutes. Youngster Trey Nyoni capped off a composed start by scoring his first senior goal for the club to put the Reds ahead. But the lead lasted barely four minutes before Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick beat Alisson Becker to bring the hosts level.

Iraola turned to his bench midway through the second half, introducing Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo, and Alexander Isak in a triple substitution. The move paid immediate dividends on 69 minutes when Gakpo swung in a precise delivery for Isak to head home and restore Liverpool’s 2-1 advantage.

Yet what followed was a defensive collapse. On 73 minutes, Archie Brown punished sloppy set-piece defending to bundle home an equalizer after a mix-up inside the penalty area. Just five minutes later, Vedat Muriqi rose highest to plant a flying header past Alisson, sending the Turkish supporters into raptures and completing Fenerbahçe’s comeback.

The Big Picture for Iraola and Liverpool

This was easily the worst night of Andoni Iraola’s reign so far. Dropping three points in Istanbul coming immediately off the back of a domestic defeat leaves Liverpool looking defensive fragile right when the season schedule reaches peak intensity.

Liverpool remain fifth in the Champions League table on nine points, but their 100% European record is gone, and their safety cushion inside the top eight has thinned out dramatically.

With another crucial Premier League fixture away to Crystal Palace looming this weekend, Iraola must rapidly address defensive concentration and game-management issues. If the Reds keep gifting opposing sides late lifelines, this winter stretch will prove far more grueling than expected.
