# After 90: Gini Wijnaldum catches up with Virgil van Dijk

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/03/31/virals-mateusz-musialowski-shows-off-his-footwork-in-training/) midfielder [Gini Wijnaldum](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/03/05/gini-wijnaldum-singled-out-by-jamie-carragher-after-chelsea-defeat/)may be facing an uncertain club future with his contract situation up in the air and a departure almost certainly on the cards.

That hasn’t stopped the Dutchman from[performing admirably](https://www.sofascore.com/player/georginio-wijnaldum/22126)this season for both club and country – albeit perhaps his performances for the Dutch national side are more eye-catching.

Currently away on international duty, Wijnaldum has been captaining Holland in the absence of Liverpool teammate and [appointed skipper](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11300252/virgil-van-dijk-named-netherlands-captain)Virgil van Dijk.

Following a [resounding 7-0 victory over Gibraltar](https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/12261345/gibraltar-0-7-netherlands) on Tuesday night, Wijnaldum, who scored once and made one assist, caught up with Van Dijk over facetime for what the 30-year-old described as a ‘de-brief’ on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/GWijnaldum/status/1377247520791924738).

The Dutch duo have earned 131 caps between them and, injury permitting will have an eye on this summers European Championships – a [tournament that could come too soon](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9394255/Euro-2020-Holland-boss-Frank-Boer-says-Virgil-van-Dijk-just-EIGHT-weeks-returning.html) for van Dijk in particular.

It seems at this juncture not even Wijnaldum’s friendship with his compatriot will [keep him at Anfield](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9384991/Liverpool-midfielder-Georginio-Wijnaldum-LEAVE-Barcelona-summer-free-transfer.html#:~:text=Georginio%20Wijnaldum%20'WILL%20leave%20Liverpool,to%20LaLiga%20giants%20last%20year&text=Georginio%20Wijnaldum%20has%20reportedly%20decided%20to%20leave%20Liverpool%20at%20the,the%20season%20to%20join%20Barcelona.) next season.

Regardless of what the future may hold the Dutch midfielder has been a [superb servant to the club](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/49499) and will be forever held in high regard by Kopites.
