# Reported Liverpool target Aster Vranckx outlines why he rejected elite move

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/10/duncan-castles-claims-kylian-mbappe-interested-in-liverpool-switch/) were [linked with a move](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-city-liverpool-transfer-tussle-21979447) for central midfielder Aster Vranckx at the beginning of the summer before the teenager [joined VFL Wolfsburg](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/wolfsburg-sign-aster-vranckx-liverpool-target-belgian-teenager-13833).

Then at Belgian Pro League side KV Mechelen, the Reds were linked with the teenager [alongside Manchester City](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8290643/Manchester-City-Liverpool-head-head-battle-sign-KV-Mechelen-wonderkid-Vranckx.html) – a move which may have materialised were it not for the player’s own career decisions.

In an interview with [Het Laatste Nieuws](https://www.hln.be/kv-mechelen/jackpot-voor-kv-mechelen-vranckx-18-trekt-naar-club-waar-hij-heen-wou-wilde-niet-gewoon-een-koopje-zijn-van-grootmacht~a639eae4/), Vranckx outlined the thinking behind his decision to make the step to the Bundesliga club, saying: “I didn’t just want to be a bargain for a European superpower. Wolfsburg really has a plan for me.”

The German club [landed the starlet](https://twitter.com/VfLWolfsburg_EN/status/1336687291834789888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1336687291834789888%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-4784954122855809377.ampproject.net%2F2011252111002%2Fframe.html) on a pre-contract until 2025 for an initial [£7.2m fee](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aster-vranckx/transfers/spieler/503881), but the Belgium under-19 international has big ambitions, insisting: “I believe in my qualities and am ambitious. Next season, I want to play as soon as possible.”

Vranckx isn’t alone in his ambitions for his career – agent Peter Verplancke believes this is merely a step towards the elite, [saying](https://www.hln.be/kv-mechelen/jackpot-voor-kv-mechelen-vranckx-18-trekt-naar-club-waar-hij-heen-wou-wilde-niet-gewoon-een-koopje-zijn-van-grootmacht~a639eae4/?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Freadliverpoolfc.com%2F): “This is the right step for him. Top European clubs were also interested, but Aster didn’t want that. ‘I’m not going to a club like that now, am I?’

“That is what typifies him. He did not want to become the plaything of a top club.”

Before his impending switch to the Bundesliga, Vranckx had played [10 times in the Belgian top flight this term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aster-vranckx/leistungsdaten/spieler/503881); scoring three times.

Clearly a player with a bright future and a wise head, the step from [Belgian football to the upper echelons Premier League](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/786046-power-ranking-the-top-30-leagues-in-europe) would have been a giant one for Vranckx to take in one fell swoop.

A move to a [mid-table German top-flight club](https://www.skysports.com/bundesliga-table) gives the player far more scope to develop without massive pressure of performing.

Whether [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/10/ian-mcgarry-friction-claims-jurgen-klopp-liverpool-transfers/) keeps an eye on the [midfielder’s development](https://www.sofascore.com/player/vranckx-aster/989371) remains to be seen – especially with a [teenage sensation of his own in Curtis Jones](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpools-latest-teenage-sensation-can-18053556) to nurture.
