# Carragher: Sturridge is not the same player that he was

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Daniel Sturridge will never be the same player that he was back in the 2013/2014 season, [the Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/jamie-carragher-fears-daniel-sturridge-11276220) reports.

Injuries have plagued the England international for some time now, and with Sturridge currently struggling to hit form with the Reds, he has come under criticism.

> He’s not in the team to press because he doesn’t. He’s not in the team to penetrate in behind because he isn’t that player anymore, injuries have taken their toll. We keep going back to that season where Liverpool nearly won the league when he was devastating with Suarez.
>
> I don’t think that player is there anymore, whether it be injuries, not playing enough.

Carragher, who discussed Sturridge’s impact in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle, believes he also doesn’t fit into Jurgen Klopp’s high-pressing, high intensity approach to the game.

> He doesn’t actually get involved a lot. The reason he is in the team is to finish chances. If that is Harry Kane, Morata or Lukaku, that is a goal and they are coming away with a 2-1 win.

> If Firmino is playing well, Sturridge doesn’t play. He hasn’t for two years under Klopp. He doesn’t fancy him.

Sturridge missed a good chance to win the game for the Reds, leading to concerns that he’s not quite up to the standard required to compete for the side.

The experienced forward has been called up by Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers. He sat out of full training on Monday along with the other players who competed in Sunday’s Premier League fixtures, participating in a recovery session.

Sturridge will hope to find his shooting boots while away with England, and will look to bounce back under Klopp after the international break.
