# Danny Murphy ‘disappointed and disgusted’ by ESL plans

Former [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/19/jamie-carragher-slams-european-super-league-plan/) midfielder Danny Murphy has been left ‘disappointed and disgusted’ as he condemned plans for the Reds, along with the five other perceived ‘big six’ clubs, to join a [breakaway European Super League](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56794673).

The new competition has been brought in to rival the UEFA Champions League, however, there could yet be [further ramifications](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56795811) as respective federations threaten to ban those involved from domestic matters.

Murphy, who played [249 times](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/386) for the club, has told [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56796391) that the proposed new tournament goes against everything he stands for.

‘That history, that tradition – all of those things that have grown since Liverpool Football Club formed in 1892 – would disappear if they joined this proposed breakaway European Super League and were banned from the Premier League.’

The 44-year-old went on to describe the idea as ‘soulless’ and ‘nonsensical’, thoughts [echoed](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/12279748/gary-neville-disgusted-by-premier-league-clubs-involved-in-breakaway-european-super-league-plans) across a majority of the football stratosphere on Sunday night.

A [top-four place](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) that could ultimately be worth very little were the Reds to sacrifice their place in next seasons Champions League.

One man whose opinion perhaps matters more than most is [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/16/dietmar-hamann-believes-liverpool-only-need-minor-changes-this-summer/)‘s, the outspoken German, who has previously [voiced his concerns](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-european-super-league-20413782) against a Super League.
