# Emre Can’s wage demands stall contract extension talks

Liverpool’s contract extension talks with German midfielder Emre Can have stalled over the player’s wage demands as he wants to be paid a similar amount as the club’s playmaker Philippe Coutinho, according to [Bleacher Report](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2742287-emre-can-contract-talks-with-liverpool-reportedly-stall-over-wage-demands).

The German has made an impressive start to the season for Liverpool and has put in some wonderful midfield performances, which has seen interest in his signature rise.

However, with his contract expiring in the upcoming summer, Liverpool have been attempting to negotiate a new and improved contract with the 23-year-old, but have failed to agree on one due to his high wage demands.

The club have a strict wage structure in place which only allows non-marquee players to earn a maximum of £75,000-a-week, which is way off the £160,000-a-week that Can desires.

The player will be free to discuss pre-contracts with clubs in January, with German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich interested as well as Serie A champions Juventus.

Another report suggests that it is not the wage demands that is stalling the contact, rather it is the inclusion of release clause that Can wants, but Liverpool are not ready to do that.

The club have not even put a release clause in Coutinho’s contract and are hugely unlikely to do it for Can.

Can has managed to find the back of the net three times in the UEFA Champions League this season and has been influential in midfield in the Premier League by registering two assists.
