# Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool ‘in contact’ with Ozan Kabak’s agent

Another day, another development in [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/24/liverpool-fans-delighted-thiago-alcantara-returns-to-training/)‘s potential quest for a central defender in January – this time it’s [Ozan Kabak](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/22/opinion-liverpool-must-consider-ozan-kabak-divock-origi-swap-schalke/)‘s turn as Fabrizio Romano confirms the Reds’ interest in the Schalke 04 player.

Speaking on his [Here We Go](https://www.patreon.com/herewegopodcast/posts) podcast, the reputable Italian journalist said that Kabak is “appreciated” by the Liverpool hierarchy and that “they’re in contact” with the 20-year-old’s representatives.

The departure of [Dejan Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/24/lovren-liverpool-zenit-west-ham-sign-tomas-soucek-on-permanent-deal) left Jurgen Klopp light on senior defensive options before the need for a centre-back was exacerbated by the [long-term injuries suffered](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joe-gomez-virgil-van-dijk-19270845) by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Various reports have linked Klopp with a move for [Kabak among others](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-transfer-centre-back-links-19364346); andit has also been claimed that there will be [no major incomings](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-news-renato-sanches-19507620) in the January window – a decision which represents a huge risk given the [fitness frailties of Joel Matip](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/verletzungen/spieler/82105) in the past.

Kabak has been one of the few players to [cover himself in any glory](https://www.sofascore.com/player/ozan-kabak/857740) this season at Schalke, who sit [rock bottom of the Bundesliga](https://www.skysports.com/bundesliga-table) with a pitiful record so far.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

To not sign a central defender of any description in January would be shortsighted and the [likely preference should be to sign a youngster](https://theathletic.co.uk/2156560/2020/10/24/liverpool-january-transfer-centre-backs-analysis/) who can play a part now whilst learning his trade.

Therefore, Kabak could present the perfect solution – especially given his [recently-revised asking price](https://talksport.com/football/808086/man-united-liverpool-schalke-ozan-kabak-bundesliga-asking-price/#:~:text=in%20demand-,Manchester%20United%20set%20to%20battle%20Liverpool%20for%20Schalke%20defender%20Ozan,asking%20price%20to%20%C2%A325m) from £40m to £25m as Schalke look to stave off financial difficulties which could stem from potential relegation.

The Reds [aren’t alone in their admiration](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9079831/Manchester-United-clubs-looking-Schalkes-highly-rated-centre-Ozan-Kabak.html) of the Turkish international and are unlikely to be afforded a free run at capturing Kabak’s signature. However, with plenty to attract players to the red half of Merseyside these days, it’s a distinctly winnable venture.
