# Liverpool fans bewildered as Fabrizio Romano confirms Sokratis offer

Plenty of [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/14/liverpool-fans-despair-naby-keita-joel-matip-miss-training/) fans have been reacting to the revelation from reliable journalist [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano) that the Reds were offered the chance to sign Arsenal defender [Sokratis Papastathopoulos](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/14/liverpool-offered-the-chance-to-sign-sokratris-claims-journalist/) this month.

Romano confirmed on his [Here We Go podcast](https://www.patreon.com/herewegopodcast) \[via [Rousing The Kop](https://www.rousingthekop.com/2021/01/13/report-liverpool-offered-arsenal-defender-sokratis-no-decision-yet/)\] that the Greek defender was made available to the reigning Premier League champions as a solution to the [defensive injury crisis](https://breakingthelines.com/scouting-report/the-liverpool-defenders-who-can-step-up-in-the-clubs-injury-crisis/) within Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

The 32-year-old played 19 times last season in the league for the Gunners, earning an average rating of[6.94 from Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/sokratis/13108).

Whilst the notion was seemingly rejected, for the time being as Romano suggested there is scope for the Reds to return. Klopp has previous with the experienced Greece international, having [worked together successfully](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/news/Bundesliga/sokratis-papastathopoulos-borussia-dortmund-colossus-greece-manchester-united-478116.jsp) at Borussia Dortmund.

Having not played a [single top-flight match](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sokratis/nationalmannschaft/spieler/34322/verein_id/3378) this season and with [more than a few previous errors](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/arsenal/arsenal-sokratis-would-not-get-into-any-premier-league-side-says-andy-townsend/) to his name, its safe to say some Kopites aren’t convinced that Sokratis is the man to resolve the current defensive ailments. Indeed, one quipped that he would be ‘another Lovren’, a reference to the [error-prone Croatian](https://www.90min.com/posts/6567700-the-last-of-lovren-defeat-at-watford-must-surely-spell-the-end-of-the-defender-s-liverpool-career) who left Anfield last summer after six years at the club.

Here’s a pick of the disparaging replies from Reds fans on Twitter…

> Twitter: @AnfieldEdition @FabrizioRomano Oh god please no. I watched him when he played for Klopp at BVB and he is just anot… https://t.co/IW8LLvrVoF (@01mJulian)
