# Garth Crooks believes James Ward-Prowse would suit Liverpool

Former Premier League striker Garth Crooks believes [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/17/virals-liverpool-interested-in-rb-leipzig-winger-christopher-nkunku/) should make a move for Southampton star [James Ward-Prowse](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/01/virals-report-claims-liverpool-looked-at-james-ward-prowse/).

The 27-year-old has become somewhat of a stalwart on the south coast despite continued [impressive](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4617/James-Ward-Prowse/stats) top-flight returns.

Meanwhile, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has faced numerous midfield dilemmas this season due to [persistent injuries](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-injury-list-suspensions-and-availability) in the department.

Crooks told [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60018166) that the Anfield club would be wise to finally attempt to sign the technically gifted Englishman.

> The free-kick scored by Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse against Wolves was outstanding, though. How long are Liverpool going to wait to buy Ward-Prowse? They allowed Georginio Wijnaldum to leave on a free transfer and are struggling in that midfield department. Ward-Prowse would fit like a glove.

This season Ward-Prowse has earned a superb [7.22 average Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/james-ward-prowse/161717) rating from 19 league outings.

Following that stunning free-kick, the [nine-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/profil/spieler/181579) England man has [six goals and five assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/leistungsdaten/spieler/181579) in 22 appearances across all competitions.

Valued at £28.8million and under a long-term contract until 2026 at St Mary’s ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/marktwertverlauf/spieler/181579)), signing the Portsmouth-born midfielder would be an expensive venture for the Reds.

Albeit a [proven operator](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/181579) at the elite level, the time for a big move may already have come and gone for Ward-Prowse.

Whilst the ace’s quality would be a welcome addition to Klopp’s squad, with Trent Alexander-Arnold ready in situ on set-piece duty one of the ace’s [biggest assets](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/105172/Show/James-Ward-Prowse) would be underused as a Liverpool player.
