# Gary Neville claims Liverpool have declined since EPL win

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that the current [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/20/garth-crooks-joins-plaudits-for-liverpool-giant-james-milner/) squad is weaker than previous incarnations.

The Reds remained unbeaten in the Premier League with a [3-0 victory](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/443821-watch-highlights-liverpool-crystal-palace-premier-league) over Crystal Palace this weekend.

That result kept Jurgen Klopp’s side level in all aspects with Chelsea at the [top of the table](https://www.premierleague.com/tables).

But, speaking on his own [podcast](https://play.acast.com/s/garynevillepodcast), Neville claimed that the squad had declined over the last few years.

> At this moment in time I do believe Liverpool aren’t the team they were a few years ago, even though they are very, very good. It’s not quite the squad of a few years ago.

Since the Reds lifted the Premier League title for the first time in 30 years, Klopp has added [Diogo Jota](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/08/diogo-jota-goal-for-portugal/), Thiago, Kostas Tsimikas and Ibrahima Konate to the ranks.

Meanwhile, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have also come to the fore at first-team level, albeit the latter is [currently sidelined](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/harvey-elliott-injury-exclusive-news-21590502).

In that same timeframe, the Reds have [lost Gini Wijnaldum](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57400206) and Xherdan Shaqiri to the French top-flight.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

It could be argued that Klopp actually has more at his [disposal](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) with the current crop.

Both Jota and Thiago have made [instant impacts](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/jota-impact-liverpool-similar-salah-klopp-headache-aldridge/1ixdq112s4wu9z9kenig0uy58) on big games, whilst both Jones and Elliott have already proven they’re cut out for the top level.

Whilst the challengers might’ve [strengthened wholesale](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12312527/transfer-news-summer-transfer-window-2021-premier-league-ins-and-outs) this summer, this Liverpool side looks to be preparing a serious tilt at the 2021/22 title.
