# Gary Neville lauds Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk

Gary Neville is hardly the most popular person amongst the Liverpool fan base but Reds’ fans will find themselves agreeing with what the former Manchester United full-back had to say about Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking on his [podcast](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11470939/listen-the-gary-neville-podcast-featuring-arsenal-v-manchester-city), the Sky Sports pundit said he always rated Van Dijk but he didn’t envisage the Dutchman having the impact he’s had at Anfield and he also paid him the compliment of comparing him to one of his former teammates.

> I thought Van Dijk was a good player at Southampton, but I didn’t think he was worth £75m, and I didn’t think he would have the impact on Liverpool’s defence that he’s had. He’s a monster and is looking a bit like Jaap Stam. It looks like he just throws people out of the way.

Liverpool’s defence has been much improved since Van Dijk arrived in January and the Reds have not conceded a single league goal at home since February.

With the midfield and forward options that the Reds have at their disposal, if Liverpool can be better at the back, they have every chance of having a good season and Neville seemingly agrees.
