Gerrard believes Van Dijk will prove his class in Europe

According to BT Sport, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes that new Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will prove his class against Porto in the Champions League.

The Reds face the Portuguese side tonight in the first leg of their Champions League as they look to succeed in the only competition which they can win this season.

This fixture will test Liverpool and their heavily criticised defence, but Gerrard backs the £75m man to prove his worth against Porto tonight.

The Dutchman has had a roller-coaster start to his Liverpool career, in which he’s scored the winner on his debut against arch-rivals Everton but also being unable to fully steady the defensive ship at Anfield, which many thought he would, especially for that price-tag.

Gerrard said this about the defender:

He has a massive role to play and it is why Liverpool were prepared to lump so much money on him, He is a magnet in both boxes so he can be just as much of a threat off set pieces going forward as he is important at the back when the team are defending.

The Liverpool fans will be hoping Gerrard is proved right, as the Champions League is all there is to fight for now for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
