# Gerrard excited about Academy keeper Grabara

Liverpool legend and current Under 18 boss Steven Gerrard has heaped praise on young goalkeeper Kamil Grabara after his performance helped the young Res go top of their group in the UEFA Youth League, the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steven-gerrard-excited-liverpool-academy-13835311) report.

The Polish youngster came in for praise from boss Gerrard over his resilience and mental strength after an early mistake handed Maribor the early lead. The goalkeeper then produced a series of top saves and also saved a penalty as Liverpool recovered and ran out 4-1 winners.

When asked about Grabara’s performance, Gerrard said:

> Kamil was very calm and experienced and bailed the team out on three or four occasions, one being the penalty. I was more pleased with his reaction to the mistake and I think that shows he is a top goalie. He is coming for crosses and making them look easy, most keepers would be in trouble with those crosses but he commands his box so well.

The midfielder who spent 26 years at Anfield from youth to senior level, believes the competition give his young squad a good taste of European action, and will improve them as players, something Gerrard didn’t have the chance to experience when he was in the Reds academy.

Grabara has been touted for a first-team promotion in the near future as Jurgen Klopp isn’t happy with his current options. Gerrard takes charge of the reverse fixture this Wednesday as Liverpool host Maribor at Prenton Park.
