# Gimenez aiming to be fit for Champions League clash with Liverpool

Jose Gimenez is hopeful of being fit for Atletico Madrid’s upcoming clash with Liverpool, according to *[Sport](https://www.sport.es/es/)*, via *[Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/good-news-simeone-atletico-player-aims-ready-face-liverpool/)*.

The Reds visit the La Liga giants in the Champions League next Tuesday, in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Gimenez has been a major [injury doubt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-gimenez/verletzungen/spieler/250845) for the game at the Wanda Metropolitano – incidentally, where Liverpool [won](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48368443) last season’s Champions League – but he has given Atletico a possible boost.

The Uruguayan returned to training with his teammates on Monday, in a bid to prove his fitness.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Gimenez’s potential return acts as a blow to Liverpool, considering his quality as a centre-back.

Tenacious and talented, the 25-year-old has been part of an Atletico defence that has [conceded just 15 goals](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/spanish-la-liga/table) in the league this season.

That being said, he has only featured [11 times](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/135914/Show/Jos%C3%A9-Gim%C3%A9nez) in La Liga overall, going to show that Diego Simeone’s side can make do without him, too.

Liverpool’s attackers attempting to break down Atletico’s stubborn rearguard will hold the key to the tie, in my opinion.

Failure to score in Spain will put pressure on the European champions at Anfield, with an away goal feeling huge for Simeone’s men in the second leg.
