# Gomez hoping for Liverpool starting spot

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez says he is hoping to put last season’s injury troubles behind him as he aims for a starting spot this season, speaking to the club’s website, as reported by the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/joe-gomez-targets-liverpool-starting-13312671).

Jurgen Klopp is keen to give Gomez a chance during the club’s pre-season tour, before deciding whether or not to loan the defender out with Brighton thought to be one of the clubs monitoring the youngster’s situation.

Gomez, 20, suffered a serious ACL injury and returned midway through the last campaign. However, he only featured three times in the first team, having to make do with regularly appearing for the Under 23 side.

The English Under-21 international joined the Reds from Charlton Athletic back in June 2015 for a fee in the region of £3.5 million before suffering his ACL injury in October 2015, keeping him out of action for over a year.

Talking to the official club website ahead of the upcoming campaign, Gomez said:

“The main thing is getting regular football, I just want to get back to enjoying my football and playing consistently. I think that’s something I’ve missed over the last couple of seasons with the injury, but now it’s all in front of me.

“I just have to put in the work and be prepared to do it. This team, with this manager, it has all the attributes to be a top season and obviously with European football this season that’s a great stage to play on. It’s just nice to be back amongst it.”
