# Gomez was surprised to receive England call-up

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has admitted that he was surprised to have received an England call-up, [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/gomez-surprised-by-dream-england-call-up/tpqmfbtup21e10pipi88ls9op) reports.

> It was a surprise. I wasn’t expecting the call-up but it was great news for me and my family, all of those close to me, and it is a dream come true.

The youngster has been called up by Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s upcoming friendlies over the next week. This is Gomez’s first ever senior call-up, and he’ll be hoping to feature in the two games over the break.

Gomez was one of many young players to be called up by Southgate in the new-look England squad, helped by an injury crisis. Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have also been given the nod.

Ex-Charlton defender Gomez spoke of how it’s a dream come true to have been recognised by the England staff at senior level, following some impressive performances for the country’s Under-21 side.

> It means a great deal for me personally. It has obviously been a dream of mine since I was a kid to represent my country at senior level.

Gomez has been in good form for Liverpool this season, displaying his versatility by playing across the back four on several occasions.
