# Gomez undergoes knee surgery and might return later this season

Joe Gomez has undergone successful knee surgery, Liverpool [confirmed](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/415749-joe-gomez-injury-update) on Thursday.

The 23-year-old picked up an injury on England duty on Wednesday, after going to ground with nobody around him.

Gomez’s [injury](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12130019/joe-gomez-liverpool-defender-suffers-injury-during-england-training) was immediately reported as serious, and while that remains the case, there is a potential silver lining for the player, Jurgen Klopp and Reds supporters.

It is hoped that the centre-back could still play again this season, rather than being ruled out for the entire campaign.

According to the *[Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/joe-gomez-injury-update-liverpool-news-b1721755.html)*‘s Melissa Reddy, it is a tendon injury rather than a ligament issue.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Although this is still a huge blow for Gomez and Liverpool, the fact that he hasn’t done his ACL for a second time has to be considered a positive.

The England international does look likely to miss several months of action, but it could have been worse, especially with Virgil van Dijk widely [expected](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) to be out until next summer.

Klopp now has a huge task rejigging his defence, with much onus on Joel Matip and Fabinho staying fit.

If the pair can stay injury-free until January that would be a major positive, allowing Liverpool to sign someone in the next transfer window.
