# Henderson to be given Freedom of the City of Sunderland

Liverpool’s Champions League win is set to earn Jordan Henderson the Freedom of the City of Sunderland, according to the [https://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/people/sunderland-born-hero-jordan-henderson-in-line-for-freedom-of-the-city-after-liverpool-champions-league-glory-1-9801941](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/people/sunderland-born-hero-jordan-henderson-in-line-for-freedom-of-the-city-after-liverpool-champions-league-glory-1-9801941)*[Sunderland Echo](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/people/sunderland-born-hero-jordan-henderson-in-line-for-freedom-of-the-city-after-liverpool-champions-league-glory-1-9801941)*.

The 28-year-old enjoyed the greatest night of his career on Saturday, as he lifted the Champions League trophy with the Reds.

The 2-0 victory meant Liverpool have now won six European Cups and Henderson cemented legendary status by becoming just the fifth man to captain them to glory in the competition.

His feats have not gone unnoticed in his hometown, with the midfielder in line to be awarded the Freedom of the City.

The plans are still in their infancy, but Sunderland City Council have confirmed the news.

Speaking about the plans, Deputy leader Coun Michael Mordey lauded Henderson for being a great role model:

> Freedom of the City for Jordan Henderson is an idea that has been suggested by the majority Labour Group, which the council is now considering.

> He has always been a fantastic ambassador for his home city, his club and his country.

> Honouring Jordan would follow freedoms awarded to Sunderland football club legends Niall Quinn MBE in 2013 and Jimmy Montgomery BEM in 2016.

It is a wonderful moment for Henderson, having endured so much criticism throughout his career.

He has recovered from a slow start to life at Liverpool to skipper them to Champions League immortality – what a great story it is.
