# James Pearce delivers transfer update as midfield targets fall

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/15/fabrizio-romano-claims-serie-a-club-have-asked-about-marko-grujic/) have so far been unable to add to the signing of [Ibrahima Konate](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/13/ibrahima-konate-first-session/) this summer.

Despite a barrage of daily speculation across Europe linking the Reds to numerous different players, Jurgen Klopp is currently overseeing a largely recognisable [34-man squad](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/van-dijk-gomez-matip-return-liverpool-squad-pre-season-camp/12m7vh7ikry0e1lvh2nr1quv0s) in Austria.

One of the key positions flagged has been a central midfield arrival, with Renato Sanches, Yves Bissouma, Youri Tielemans and more recently Saul Niguez [all linked](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/5-midfielders-liverpool-could-sign-to-replace-gini-wijnaldum) with replacing Gini Wijnaldum.

Now a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2697759/2021/07/14/liverpool-transfers-no-moves-for-saul-or-tielemans-late-summer-business-expected-as-club-target-sales/?source=emp_shared_article), as cited by [James Pearce](https://twitter.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/1415571100302458885) on Twitter, has outlined that pursuit as well as the possible incomings and departures.

The report all but rules out moves for Sanches, Bissouma and Tielemans, whilst Saul [looks set to join Barcelona](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2021/07/14/60ef0ea246163ff2a88b45c7.html) as part of an exchange for Antoine Griezmann.

Pearce does state that ‘shortlists have been drawn up’ for both midfield and attacking options – singling out PSV forward [Donyell Malen](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/14/virals-liverpool-target-donyell-malen-very-close-to-borussia-dortmund/) as an option on the radar.

In terms of outings, Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson are two players described as ‘destined for permanent transfers’ as the Reds [look to raise funds](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-sell-11-players-millions-20264292) for any incomings.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Although it’s easy to get carried away with possible deals and impatient when transfers don’t come through, Liverpool’s [transfer business](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/alletransfers/verein/31) has rather come as a surprise in recent years.

For instance, the [arrival of Diogo Jota](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54214671) last summer seemed to come from left-field – leaving hope that something similar could potentially be on the cards in this window.

One thing is for sure is that the squad needs a minor overhaul, perhaps with [Xherdan Shaqiri](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/14/fabrizio-romano-100-convinced-liverpool-need-to-sell-squad-players/) and Divock Origi also making way for new models.

The [report](https://theathletic.com/2697759/2021/07/14/liverpool-transfers-no-moves-for-saul-or-tielemans-late-summer-business-expected-as-club-target-sales/?source=emp_shared_article) does finish by stating that the next few weeks will begin to shape the window from a Liverpool perspective, so Kopites can hope for some activity in the not too distant future.
