# Journalist claims ‘nothing going on’ between Liverpool and Nicolo Barella

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/15/james-pearce-delivers-transfer-update-as-midfield-targets-fall/) had reportedly made a sensational approach to sign Inter Milan midfielder [Nicolo Barella](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/14/liverpool-offer-for-nicolo-barella/).

Italian journalist [Marco Conterio](https://twitter.com/marcoconterio) claimed that both the Reds and arch-rivals Manchester United had made offers of €70million (£60million) in an attempt to land the 24-year-old.

However, [Fabrizio Romano](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1415452926903001090) has since shot down those reports on Twitter, insisting there is no route to signing Barella this summer.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to strengthen the midfield department during this transfer window following the [departure](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11820/12189637/georginio-wijnaldum-paris-saint-germain-sign-midfielder-on-free-transfer-from-liverpool) of Gini Wijnaldum.

Fresh off the back of playing a leading role in a Serie A title win and [starring for Italy](https://www.sofascore.com/player/nicolo-barella/363856) at Euro 2020, Barella’s [stock](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nicolo-barella/marktwertverlauf/spieler/255942) is at an all-time career high.

The 29-cap ace [scored three and assisted another 10 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nicolo-barella/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/255942) in 2020/21 – earning an impressive [7.11 average Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/nicolo-barella/363856) in the process.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

All things considered, this deal always seemed farfetched.

Not only are the finances out of the potential realms of Liverpool’s possibilities this summer, but the Italian’s [importance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nicolo-barella/erfolge/spieler/255942) at the San Siro would also make it an unlikely feat.

Barella would be the dream arrival at Anfield however, young enough to [improve immensely](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/148684/Show/Nicol%C3%B2-Barella) and already a top performer.
