# Jurgen Klopp bemused by Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield outcry

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/10/virals-liverpool-contemplate-january-move-for-karim-adeyemi/) manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed confusion over calls for [Trent Alexander-Arnold](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/06/gary-lineker-trent-midfield-praise/) to move into midfield.

This comes after the 22-year-old started for England against Andorra in the [heart of the midfield](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/sep/06/shifting-trent-alexander-arnold-into-england-midfield-blast-from-failed-past) during the international break alongside Jude Bellingham and Reds’ captain Jordan Henderson.

Often on the periphery of the national side in his more natural right-back role, Alexander-Arnold has often been [urged](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/england-eng/story/4358031/liverpools-alexander-arnold-could-take-his-game-to-next-level-and-revive-england-career-with-move-into-midfield) to move into a more advanced position.

[Speaking](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/442621-watch-jurgen-klopp-leeds-press-conference) ahead of the trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday, as cited by [Paul Gorst](https://twitter.com/ptgorst/status/1436295319285870595) on Twitter, Klopp has questioned the sense in switching the Scouse full-back.

> Twitter: Klopp: “But why would you make the best right-back in the world a midfielder?

> “I struggle to understand how you can think that?” (@ptgorst)

Alexander-Arnold has already [broken his own record](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/403093-trent-alexander-arnold-breaks-his-own-premier-league-assist-record) for the most assists by a defender in a single Premier League season with 13 in the 2019/20 campaign.

Last term was less impressive however as the [14-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/nationalmannschaft/spieler/314353/verein_id/3299) ace [scored twice and provided seven assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353/plus/0/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) from a marauding right-back role.

Valued at £67.5million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/marktwertverlauf/spieler/314353)), the West Derby born starlet has previously touched the £100million valuation mark – proof of his exploits already.

Whilst many of the calls perhaps stem from a [similar switch Steven Gerrard made](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/305) early on in his career, Alexander-Arnold has gone a long way to reinventing the position in the mould of Cafu and Dani Alves beforehand.

Already a Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup [winner](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/erfolge/spieler/314353), whatever the ace has been doing until now seems to have worked just fine.
