# Klopp ‘desperate’ to tie down Wijnaldum to new contract, claims journalist

Jurgen Klopp is ‘desperate’ for Gini Wijnaldum to sign a new deal at Liverpool, according to the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-transfers-timo-werner-premier-league-title-latest-questions-david-lynch-a4393706.html)‘s David Lynch.

The Dutchman has been a fantastic servant for the Reds, having [joined](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36846756) from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016.

Wijnaldum is yet to extend his stay at Anfield, however, with his current contract expiring in the summer of [2021](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499).

Speaking in a [Q&A](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-transfers-timo-werner-premier-league-title-latest-questions-david-lynch-a4393706.html) on Monday, Lynch confirmed that getting the 29-year-old to commit his future to the club is at the top of Klopp’s priorities in the coming weeks:

> Klopp is desperate to get Gini Wijnaldum tied down to a new contract and talks are ongoing on that front.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Wijnaldum’s importance to his Liverpool side can never be underestimated, even if a lot of his good work can sometimes go unnoticed. He has a [90.9 per cent](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/33568/Show/Georginio-Wijnaldum) pass completion rate in the Premier League this season, not to mention an average of [1.2 dribbles and 1.0 tackles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/33568/Show/Georginio-Wijnaldum) per match.

The former Newcastle man won’t often earn as many headlines as some of his Reds teammates, but the fact that he has made [177 appearances](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1310) over the past four seasons speaks volumes about how Klopp thinks about him.

Wijnaldum remains as important as ever, so the hope is that he pens a new deal sooner rather than later.

He turns 30 this year, and while a new contract may be a slight risk in that respect, his fitness levels and [injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/verletzungen/spieler/49499) suggest he still has plenty left in the tank.
