# Klopp discusses Clyne’s back injury

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given an update on Nathaniel Clyne’s back injury.

The England international is yet to play a competitive fixture for the Reds this season following an injury he sustained during pre-season, and it looks as though he’s set to miss a prolonged period of time yet.

Clyne was excluded from Liverpool’s 25-man Champions League squad, which came as something of a surprise to Reds fans. It’s been well publicised that the former Southampton man is struggling with his fitness, but Klopp has revealed today that the extent of the injury is worse than initially expected.

Klopp, as quoted by the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-boss-jurgen-klopp-delivers-13576342) today, discussed Clyne’s condition.

> Nathaniel is working hard on his rehab and we have kept a close eye on his progress, but the reality is we are looking at some time still before he is back and available for selection. I am told it will be longer than just a couple of weeks, so we will continue to monitor and assess.

The German manager did, however, insist that there is a chance for Clyne to be integrated into the squad for European competition, providing that they qualify for the round of 16.

> It is pretty certain he’ll not be available for the majority of the Champions League group matches. If we are fortunate enough to still be in UEFA competition in the New Year he could be added to the squad then.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have been filling in at right-back in Clyne’s absence this season.

> The medical guys are pleased with how he is responding and Nathaniel has shown a really strong attitude, given he is not someone who is used to being out injured.
