# Klopp explains why Liverpool are unlikely to sign a defender this month

Jurgen Klopp has explained why Liverpool are unlikely to sign a new defender this month, despite their problems at the back showing no signs of improving.

[As reported by the Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-drops-liverpool-transfer-15706405), Klopp explained that the club have made a decision on their January business and intend to stick to it.

> It is a really difficult problem. I can imagine what people think about this situation but you have to make decisions in moments when decisions are on the table.

Many have urged Liverpool to sign a defender this month after the injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With Joe Gomez already ruled out through injury and Nathaniel Clyne joining Bournemouth on loan, options at the back are limited for Klopp.

To make matters worse for Klopp, James Milner, who had been used as a makeshift defender against Crystal Palace, saw red and was sent off for two yellow cards against Roy Hodgson’s side over the weekend.

Milner will now miss the game against Leicester, but Klopp did provide a positive update by confirming that Alexander-Arnold’s injury is not as serious as first anticipated.

> Trent got an injury and it’s serious but not that serious. He will be back early but I don’t know if early enough for the next game. Maybe the game after (at West Ham United the following Monday).
>
> Everyone gives me the feeling, Trent as well, that that is absolutely possible but we have to wait and cannot risk anything. We have to come through this situation.
