# Koeman again hints at Wijnaldum joining Barcelona next summer

Ronald Koeman has again failed to rule out the possibility of Barcelona signing Gini Wijnaldum, admitting he “could be an option” in the future.

The Liverpool midfielder is yet to sign a contract extension at Anfield, with his current deal [expiring](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/profil/spieler/49499) next summer.

Barcelona were constantly [linked](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/09/02/gini-wijnaldum-agrees-barcelona-transfer/) with a move for Wijnaldum during the last transfer window, but he ended up staying put.

The 30-year-old has made an impressive start to the season for Liverpool, [starting seven](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/33568/Show/Georginio-Wijnaldum) of their eight Premier League games to date.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

I think Liverpool are in a win-win situation with Wijnaldum, in terms of his future at the club.

If he decides to stay on, Jurgen Klopp will retain the services of a top class footballer who knows his system inside out, providing quality and intelligence in the middle of the park.

On the flip side, he is 30 now and a new challenge could appeal, allowing Liverpool to usher in younger players such as Naby Keita and Curtis Jones, making them more integral.

It does feel as though this could be Wijnaldum’s swansong at Liverpool, however, in what is his fifth season at the club, given his reluctance to sign a new deal so far.
