# Kuyt believes Van Dijk would suit Liverpool

Former Liverpool attacker Dirk Kuyt believes that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk would fit in well at Anfield.

Kuyt spoke to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11136055/virgil-van-dijk-would-suit-liverpool-says-dirk-kuyt) about the Reds and their season so far, but particularly singled out Van Dijk as a player who would drastically improve them.

> I know Virgil. I didn’t play with him in the national team but he’s a great player. We’ll see how things will go in the winter break or at the end of the season.

> I don’t think it’s strange for me to say he is a player who will suit Liverpool very well. He has the right mentality and he is a great defender.

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Van Dijk and the player himself if believed to be extremely keen on a move to Anfield still, despite insisting that he is fully focused on the task at hand with Southampton.

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in the summer as he looked to force a move away from the club but was denied, with Saints keen to keep hold of their star players.

> He could do a great job at Liverpool but it’s not for me to say if he would be an improvement or not. That’s up to the club.

However, the January transfer window presents a new opportunity for Liverpool to act on their interest, with their defence still coming under plenty of criticism.

Kuyt was a key player for the Reds during his tenure at the club and will undoubtedly be well aware of the qualities that his compatriot Van Dijk possesses.
