# Liverpool agree to sign Virgil van Dijk for club-record fee

According to a report from Jeremy Wilson for the [Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/12/27/liverpool-agree-world-record-75m-deal-virgil-van-dijk/), Liverpool have finally reached an agreement with Southampton over the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

It’s stated that the two clubs have come to an agreement over a £75 million deal, which will go down in Liverpool’s history as the club’s most expensive ever transfer.

The deal for Van Dijk will also mean that he is the most expensive defender in the world.

The Dutchman handed in a formal transfer request in the summer as he looked to push through a move to Anfield, but Saints’ board remained adamant that he was to stay at the club.

Van Dijk has been dropped completely from Saints’ 18-man matchday squad in the last two outings against Huddersfield and most recently [Tottenham](https://readtottenham.com/) Hotspur.

It now looks as though when the January transfer window does open, Van Dijk will depart St Mary’s to secure his dream move to Anfield.

Van Dijk is keen to work with Jurgen Klopp and is sure to be hoping that no last-minute stumbling blocks emerge in his aim to play for Liverpool in the second half of the season.

The Netherlands international is poised to earn in the region of £180,000 per week, according to Wilson.
