# Liverpool among leading contenders in Maxi Wöber pursuit

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/04/roy-keane-still-backing-liverpool-to-retain-the-premier-league-title/) are believed to be among the ‘options’ available to Red Bull Salzburg defender Maxi Wöber, who could help ease the [defensive injury crisis](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-injuries-matip-jota-vandijk-18850112) this season at Anfield.

This comes as reports from [Eurosport](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/transfers/2020-2021/what-transfers-do-premier-league-big-six-need-in-january-inside-football-updates-on-key-targets_sto8050038/story.shtml) and Austrian publication [Der Standard](https://www.derstandard.at/story/2000122890436/liverpool-soll-interesse-an-maximilian-woeber-haben) have linked the Reds and a host of other clubs with the 22-year-old, who has a market value of £8.2m according to [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/maximilian-wober/profil/spieler/263361).

Jurgen Klopp’s [loyalty to his current squad members](https://talksport.com/football/786065/liverpool-jurgen-klopp-start-diogo-jota-ahea-roberto-firmino-man-city/) is being stretched to breaking point as his defenders fall by the wayside on a continued basis. However, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will venture into the transfer market for a centre-back, something which is [seen by many](https://www.goal.com/en/news/liverpool-must-sign-a-centre-back-in-january-carragher/1vn2lmejw3p9u12e51y2fwfl84) as a necessity.

[Austria under-21 international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/maximilian-wober/nationalmannschaft/spieler/263361/verein_id/9316) Wöber has made [19 first team appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/maximilian-wober/leistungsdaten/spieler/263361)this season, including all six of Salzburg’s Champions League group games.

Liverpool have a recent history of transfer dealings with the Austrian champions after [signing Takumi Minamino](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11890345/takumi-minamino-liverpool-sign-red-bull-salzburg-midfielder) just over a year ago.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

In normal circumstances, links with a defender of the quality, age and [potential of Wöber](https://totalfootballanalysis.com/player-analysis/maximilian-wober-sevilla-tactical-analysis-statistics) would be viewed with an eye to the future whilst playing cup games in place of the [departed Dejan Lovren](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/27/dejan-lovren-leaves-liverpool-zenit-jurgen-klopp-and-mo-salah-pay-tribute).

Now that the need is far more urgent, Klopp needs a defender who is [tried and tested](https://www.fotmob.com/players/701149/maximilian-w%C3%B6ber) at the elite level and can play an instant role in the first team, and the [6’1 left-footer](https://www.sofascore.com/player/maximilian-wober/794962) could fit the bill.

Back in November the Austrian won [seven of his 10 duels](https://www.sofascore.com/player/maximilian-wober/794962) against Bayern Munich’s attackers, including battles with prolific striker Robert Lewandowski.

After the Reds’ apparent move for [Sven Botman](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/03/liverpool-fans-react-to-disappointing-james-pearce-tweet/) was [kiboshed by James Pearce](https://twitter.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/1345706005091512322), we won’t be getting too carried away with these links just yet.
