# Liverpool remain ‘attractive competitors’ for Dayot Upamecano

Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has described [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/02/liverpool-fans-are-furious-about-referee-appointment-for-brighton-clash/) as ‘attractive competitors’ to the German giants for the signature of RB Leipzig star [Dayot Upamecano](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/26/andy-brassell-dismisses-january-move-for-dayot-upamecano/).

The Reds have been long-time suitors for the central defender with a[modest release clause](https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/upamecanos-425m-release-clause-confirmed-with-bayern-target/l4pgfp25byj11p0kcrk9plqip) and Rummenigge told [Sky Deutschland](https://sport.sky.de/fussball/artikel/fc-bayern-transfer-news-karl-heinz-rummenigge-zu-upamecano/12205547/34130) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/chelsea-liverpool-rumenigge-bayern-upamecano-transfer/)) that the Premier League champions, along with Chelsea, remain in the hunt for the Frenchman.

He said: ”There are still at least two attractive competitors with Bayern Munich, the fact is that the player is interesting.” The 65-year-old went on to mention the two Premier League sides directly as the main protagonists to deny Bayern the signing.

Upamecano is widely regarded as one of the [best young defenders in the world](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/news/Bundesliga/dayot-upamecano-rb-leipzig-world-s-best-young-defender-ousmane-dembele-473962.jsp), and one who Jurgen Klopp would likely relish the opportunity to improve even further.

Despite Liverpool’s [well-documented central defensive issues](https://talksport.com/football/817585/liverpool-vs-man-united-defensive-attack-salah-mane-goals/) being somewhat remedied on transfer deadline day with a [double signing](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55897340), the arrival of Ozan Kabak in particular could end up being merely a short term solution.
