# Liverpool could trigger Upamecano’s £36.5m release clause

Liverpool and Manchester United could trigger Dayot Upamecano’s £36.5million release clause next summer, according to *[Sport Bild](https://sportbild.bild.de/)*, via the [https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/07/manchester-united-and-liverpool-already-circling-around-dayot-upamecano-with-release-clause-set-to-drop-to-just-36-5m-13386164/](https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/07/manchester-united-and-liverpool-already-circling-around-dayot-upamecano-with-release-clause-set-to-drop-to-just-36-5m-13386164/)*[Metro](https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/07/manchester-united-and-liverpool-already-circling-around-dayot-upamecano-with-release-clause-set-to-drop-to-just-36-5m-13386164/)*.

The centre-back has shone for RB Leipzig in recent seasons, proving to be a key man for the Bundesliga side.

It is believed that this could be Upamecano’s final year in Germany, however, with a move to the Premier League possible.

The 21-year-old’s old release clause was £54million, but that has since changed because he signed a new deal until 2023.

There is no denying Upamecano’s quality as a centre-back, with the Frenchman a dominant figure who won an average of [1.9 aerial duels and 1.9 tackles per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/327721/History/Dayot-Upamecano) in the Bundesliga last season.

To be able to sign him for as a little as £36.5million seems like a steal, too, considering his long-term potential.

I do still see Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as Liverpool’s first-choice defensive pairing, however, despite the latter’s poor recent form.

They have thrived alongside one another in the past two seasons, and at just 23 still, Gomez should be afforded the odd dip in form. He has still averaged more aerials per match ([2.7](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/136451/Show/Joe-Gomez)) in the league than Upamecano ([1.7](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/327721/Show/Dayot-Upamecano)) this season and committed fewer fouls (0.7 compared to 1.0).

Upamecano could be a great long-term addition, though, especially with Van Dijk and Joel Matip both 29 now, and Jurgen Klopp planning further down the line.
