# Liverpool eye deal to sign Alex McCarthy from Southampton

Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to claims from the [Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-arsenal-battle-out-southampton-12525111).

It’s believed that the Reds want to reinforce their goalkeeping options this summer, with Simon Mignolet expected to complete his exit from Anfield in the transfer window.

Liverpool are understood to be content with Loris Karius as their first-choice goalkeeper heading into next season but a new and reliable backup option appears to be on the Reds’ wish list.

McCarthy has been an outstanding performer in what has been a difficult season for Southampton. His form in recent weeks contributed to Mark Hughes’ side narrowly avoiding relegation down to the Championship.

The 28-year-old has spent much of his career in the top-flight as a backup option for clubs but at Southampton, he appears to have made the number one spot his own.

Liverpool may face competition in their pursuit of McCarthy, too. Arsenal and newly-promoted Wolves have been linked.
