# Liverpool face being thrown out of the Carabao Cup

The EFL have launched an official investigation after it was revealed that one of the Liverpool players, who played in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over MK Dons may not have been registered to feature in the Carabao Cup.

As per a report from [James Pearce of The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1246413/2019/09/28/exclusive-liverpool-face-being-kicked-out-of-carabao-cup/), the player in question has not been identified but Liverpool could be thrown out of the Carabao Cup if they are found to have fielded an ineligible player.

Paul Joyce of The Times reports that the EFL ineligible Liverpool player in question is Pedro Chirivella. The Spaniard joined Extremadura on loan back in January and the EFL are investigating if he had the correct international clearance upon his return. Chirivella come on as a substitute for Naby Keita after 63 minutes.

Whilst the threat of being kicked out is a real possibility, Sunderland were only fined for fielding an ineligible player in the same competition back in 2014, so a precedent has been set by the Football League.
