# Liverpool fans get excited as Sven Botman links gain momentum

Never the type to hide their enthusiasm, [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/01/liverpool-fans-not-sold-on-didi-hamanns-kinglsey-coman-suggestion/) fans have allowed themselves to get excited after links emerged suggesting the Reds are ‘working on’ a deal for Lille defender [Sven Botman](https://readliverpoolfc.com/?p=111417).

[Duncan Castles](https://twitter.com/DuncanCastles) has sparked the furore after [he claimed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=BpF3o7fI1vc) the Premier League champions had earmarked the 20-year-old Dutchman as the potential solution to the ongoing defensive dilemma at Anfield.

Furthermore, owing to the[financial worries in France](https://theathletic.co.uk/2265189/2020/12/18/lille-football-private-equity/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20financial%20difficulties%20at%20Lille,'%20wages%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20explains.&text=%E2%80%9CWe%20need%20to%20see%20how,player%20sales%20and%20competitive%20balance.), Botman’s current employers are believed to be willing to part ways with their [ever-present](https://www.transfermarkt.com/sven-botman/leistungsdaten/spieler/361093) centre-half, despite only [signing him in the summer](https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2020/lille-to-sign-sven-botman-from-ajax-for-e9m/) from Ajax.

There had been concern amongst Kopites that the club would be at[their frugal worst in January](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-january-transfer-news-gossip-19459719), despite the obvious need for reinforcements with[all three senior centre-backs](https://www.premierinjuries.com/injury-table.php)currently sidelined.

Known for their [coy transfer negotiations](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1273563/Liverpool-transfer-news-summer-signings-Timo-Werner-gossip-latest-COVID-19)in the past, experienced Jurgen Klopp transfer followers[know better than to listen to the noises](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/18/liverpool-sign-thiago-alcantara-from-bayern-munich-jurgen-klopp) coming out of the club at times.

It remains to be seen whether or not any deal will come to fruition, let alone for Botman, who has been[praised by Virgil van Dijk’s former Southampton teammate](https://www.ligue1.com/Articles/LIGUE-1-SHOW/2020/10/03/sven-botman-lille-s-dutch-knight-rises-fonte-galtier-losc) Jose Fonte.

The Reds will no doubt continue to be[linked with a defender](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-transfer-centre-back-links-19364346) every day, but for now, let’s revel in the excitement over the most recent links…
