# Liverpool fans react to journalist’s claims on January transfer business

Many [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/23/liverpool-contact-sven-botman-agent-transfer-rumours/) supporters may have been expecting a busy January transfer window as [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/22/liverpool-fans-react-as-stats-prove-how-much-var-has-gone-against-reds/) looked to fill considerable holes in his squad caused by long-term injuries.

With last season’s first-choice central defensive duo of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both [expected to be out for the majority of the season](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12130212/joe-gomez-and-virgil-van-dijk-injuries-puts-huge-stress-on-liverpool-squad-says-jamie-redknapp), it was widely expected that the Reds would look to sign a centre-half in the winter transfer window.

However, a report from the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-news-renato-sanches-19507620)‘s Ian Doyle has claimed it could be a quiet window and the club are ‘unlikely to make any major signings in January’.

In the absence of Gomez and Van Dijk, Fabinho has [dropped back into defence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fabinho/leistungsdaten/spieler/225693) whilst youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have both [deputised with distinction](https://www.goal.com/en/news/liverpools-van-dijk-replacement-how-rhys-williams-went-from/16f3e8ec1v27815ea6it6gzjhi) on occasion.

This decision could of course change in the interim, it would only take one more defensive injury to send the [Anfield squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) deep into the doldrums once more.

Having been [linked with a host of potential suitors](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-transfer-centre-back-links-19364346)to fill the void left by Van Dijk and Gomez, many Kopites may have allowed themselves to be optimistic over a new arrival.

Here’s a pick of the reactions from Liverpool fans on Twitter, with some calling the situation “laughable” and fearing that there could be “no title” this season without defensive reinforcements next month…
