# Liverpool fans react to a confusing night away to Midtjylland

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/09/liverpool-fans-react-to-starting-xi-against-midtjylland-is-it-too-strong/) rounded off their [Champions League](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/standings/) group stage with a [1-1 draw away in Denmark against FC Midtjylland](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/12/09/fc-midtjylland-vs-liverpool-champions-league-live-score-latest/)on Wednesday evening, but it was far from a straightforward affair as VAR once again played its part.

In what was a bizarre evening’s work, Reds boss [Jurgen Klopp](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/09/journalist-provides-update-on-liverpool-signing-centre-back-in-january/) named a surprisingly strong starting lineup for what was ultimately little more than a box-ticking exercise with nothing on the game for either side.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in a fashion befitting the rest of the evening as he bundled home inside the first minute – in doing so the Egyptian[broke Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool Champions League scoring record](https://metro.co.uk/2020/12/09/mohamed-salah-breaks-steven-gerrards-liverpool-champions-league-record-with-goal-against-fc-midtjylland-13728195/) before going on to play the remaining 97 minutes, rather inexplicably.

VAR intervened twice as the[match wore on](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/12/09/fc-midtjylland-vs-liverpool-champions-league-live-score-latest/)– ruling out what seemed a perfectly legitimate Takumi Minamino winner shortly after awarding the hosts a penalty, despite the offside flag being raised in the build-up.

Ultimately, the Reds won’t spare a second thought on their mad night in Denmark, as they advance to the knockout stages.
