# Liverpool in line for a cash boost as Leeds eye up a move for Alberto

Liverpool could be in line for a shock windfall after Premier League newcomers Leeds United have reportedly expressed interest in veteran playmaker Luis Alberto.

[According to reports by the Daily Star](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-luis-alberto-liverpool-transfers-22608339), who cite elements in the Italian press, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has made personal enquiries as to the availability of Alberto.

The Spaniard, now 27, was sold by the Reds for just £4.3 million to Italian giants Lazio back in 2016 but Liverpool shrewdly inserted a considerable 30% sell-on clause to the deal as an insurance mechanism for Alberto’s future development.

This insertion appears to be set to pay dividends – indeed, a move to Italy has revitalised the creative technician’s career. Alberto [has managed an impressive goal tally](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-alberto/profil/spieler/128220), scoring 22 goals in little over 100 appearances and assisting 37 more. Consequentially, interest in procuring the midfield maestro’s services is undoubtedly justified by the contributions Alberto has made to Lazio’s recent success.

Alberto’s impact at Anfield was limited, making only occasional cameos – the most notable of which came in a 5-0 thrashing of Tottenham in 2013 with Alberto skilfully assisting Luis Suarez. Alberto then subsequently spent the next two seasons on loan in his native Spain, playing for Malaga CF and Deportivo de La Coruna, respectively.

However, Alberto’s on-pitch prowess in Italy will make him an attractive prospect to any suitor.

As such, Liverpool’s intelligent negotiations may finally bear fruit – potentially four years after Alberto left Anfield.
