# Liverpool are interested in Denis Zakaria

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/10/liverpool-target-jadon-sancho-likely-to-leave-borussia-dortmund/) are one of the clubs reported to be ‘interested’ in Borussia Mönchengladbach defensive midfielder [Denis Zakaria](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/09/14/liverpool-interested-in-swiss-international-midfielder-denis-zakaria/), according to [Sport Bild](https://sportbild.bild.de/) (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/liverpool-interested-in-player-signs-are-now-pointing-to-separation-with-club-in-summer/)).

The 24-year-old only [returned from a nine-month layoff](https://www.borussia.de/en/news/news/2020-12-03-denis-zakaria-im-on-the-right-track) in November after suffering a serious knee injury last March and has since struggled to recapture his best form.

A recent leading role in [Mönchengladbach’s 4-2 victory](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55774599) over Borussia Dortmund showed signs of a return to what the report cited as the Swiss international’s ‘[undisputed class](https://sportwitness.co.uk/liverpool-interested-in-player-signs-are-now-pointing-to-separation-with-club-in-summer/)‘.

Bild claimed that, with the midfielder’s [contract due to expire in 2022](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/profil/spieler/334526), the Bundesliga side may be forced to cash in soon, and a ‘transfer is on the way this summer’ should they be unable to persuade Zakaria to extend his stay.

Previously, both Manchester-based Premier League clubs have been [touted with an interest](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-man-city-transfers-19394023) in the midfielder [described as](https://sportbild.bild.de/fussball/2019/bayern-muenchen/guenter-netzer-interview-gladbach-uli-hoeness-dfb-euro-66296336.sport.html) ‘enormously valuable’ by German football legend Gunter Netzer.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

A fee of around £45m [has been mooted](https://www.si.com/soccer/manchestercity/transfer-rumours/bundesliga-side-set-50m-price-tag-for-midfielder-as-man-city-express-interest#:~:text=Borussia%20M%C3%B6nchengladbach%20have%20named%20an,by%20Goal%20correspondent%20Ronan%20Murphy.) as enough to sign the Swiss star, although Liverpool’s chief negotiators will be keen to chip away at that figure.

Given how well [Fabinho has performed](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/fabinho-man-utd-display-proved-liverpools-stand-in-centre-back-is-one-of-the-premier-leagues-best-defenders-833371) as central defensive cover this term, Jurgen Klopp may well be seriously considering keeping the Brazilian in the backline.

This would leave a vacancy at the base of the Liverpool midfield – one which Zakaria, a [teammate of Reds winger Xherdan Shaqiri](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48191915) at international level, could feasibly fill.

The defensive midfield duo have already been [measured up against one another](https://www.sportskeeda.com/football/comparing-denis-zakaria-s-stats-to-liverpool-s-fabinho-can-he-be-the-missing-piece-in-united-s-midfield-puzzle#:~:text=Fabinho%20has%20a%20pass%20success%20percentage%20of%2086.7%20compared%20to%20Zakaria's%2085.4.&text=However%2C%20his%20distribution%20needs%20to,season%20compared%20to%20Fabinho's%2060.1.) and Zakaria’s statistics stood up admirably.
