# Liverpool keen on Atletico defender Gimenez

Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

According to a report from Spanish news outlet [AS](https://futbol.as.com/futbol/2017/03/22/primera/1490221368_665445.html) today, the Reds have been running the rule over the young defender in recent times and are holding a keen interest in bringing him to Anfield when the summer transfer window opens.

The lack of playing time Gimenez has been receiving at Atletico under Diego Simeone this season has been somewhat surprising, with the centre-back only making seven starts in La Liga this season.

This spells an opportunity for potential suitors to make their move to sign Gimenez in the summer but if Liverpool do want to bring the Uruguayan international to Merseyside in the near future, they’ll need to fend off top flight competition for his signature.

The report claims that whilst Liverpool have made ‘frequent contacts’ with Gimenez’s representatives over a move, Manchester United are leading the race to sign him.
