# Liverpool leading the race to sign Porto’s Diogo Leite

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Porto’s defender Diogo Leite, according to Jacob Steinberg of [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/09/liverpool-diogo-leite-porto?CMP=share_btn_tw).

The Reds have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old, who is also a target for Arsenal and Manchester City, and have apparently been impressed by his performances for Porto’s B team.

Leite was part of the Porto U23 side who played Arsenal on Tuesday night at the Emirates, and Liverpool apparently has scouts there to watch him.

The teenager has a €15m release clause in his contract, which Arsenal are reportedly happy to meet, but it looks like Liverpool are now likely to be the team who pay the fee to bring the teenager to England.

Liverpool’s reputation of developing young talent is not going unnoticed around Europe, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez proving that the Reds are willing to give young players a chance of getting regular first-team football.

However, according to Steinberg, if Liverpool do complete a deal for Leite, they’ll look to send him out on loan immediately so he can get some first team experience, before hopefully bringing him into the squad for the 2019/20 season.
