# Liverpool linked with move for defender likened to Matip

Liverpool are interested in signing Schalke youngster Malick Thiaw this summer, according to the *[Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-plot-malick-thiaw-transfer-21732408)*.

The 18-year-old has been compared to Joel Matip, in terms of his style and stature.

Reds scouts are believed to be have been watching Thiaw closely, with his current deal at Schalke expiring in the summer of 2021.

His release clause is £7 million, which Liverpool could trigger if they act quickly, before he potentially extends his stay in Germany.

If Thiaw did move to Anfield, he would likely be seen as one for the future, rather than an immediate first-team squad member. The teenage centre-back has still only made [one appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/malick-thiaw/profil/spieler/521964) in the Bundesliga, highlighting his lack of experience.

The hope is that Jurgen Klopp builds a dynasty at Liverpool, which could mean younger players eventually having to come in and take over the mantle from the current Reds stars.

With Matip and Virgil van Dijk both turning 29 this year, Klopp may be eyeing up replacements further down the line, perhaps as a partner for 22-year-old Joe Gomez.

Thiaw could represent that option, potentially maturing in the academy and being handed first-team opportunities when they come his way.

The likes of Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg are also impressive young centre-backs at Anfield, however, so there could be stiff competition if Thiaw does head to Merseyside.
