# Liverpool linked with move for controversial defender Ruben Semedo

Liverpool are eyeing up a move for controversial Olympiakos centre-back Ruben Semedo, according to *[SIC Noticias](https://sicnoticias.pt/)* \[via journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/choria80/status/1326975034133508098?s=20)\].

The Reds find themselves in a defensive crisis, with [Virgil van Dijk](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/11/10/wijnaldum-admits-van-dijk-will-go-through-hell-in-injury-recovery/) and [Joe Gomez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/11/11/liverpool-fans-are-devastated-as-gomez-suffers-serious-injury-in-training/) both potentially missing the rest of the season with serious injuries. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho are [also out injured currently](https://www.premierinjuries.com/injury-table.php), while Joel Matip’s [inability to stay fit](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/verletzungen/spieler/82105) for long periods has been proven in the past.

It could be that Jurgen Klopp delves into the transfer market in January, with a host of a names already linked with moves to Anfield, including [Ozan Kabak](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/milan-assist-dello-schalke-per-kabak-la-nuova-valutazione-al-rib-84600) and [Dayot Upamecano](https://theathletic.com/news/liverpool-joe-gomez-injury-latest/qAuDWrm29K4q?source=rss).

Now, it is claimed that Liverpool want Semedo, who has a chequered past, having been [charged](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2792966-kidnapping-attempted-murder-and-ruben-semedos-second-chance-at-huesca) with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery back in 2018.

Now plying his trade at Olympiakos, the Portugal international has been trying to rebuild his career, [starting all three](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/136305/Show/R%C3%BAben-Semedo) of his side’s Champions League games this season.

It could be argued that Semedo has overcome his previous troubles, but it would still be a surprise to see Liverpool make a move for him. Klopp is a keen advocate of not only signing good footballers, but also [good people](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/liverpool-rejected-ps100m-coutinho-jurgen-klopp-squad-harmony), which it could be argued Semedo isn’t.

The Liverpool manager wouldn’t want a disruptive influence coming in and affecting the [fantastic team spirit](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jun/26/trust-patience-and-hard-work-how-jurgen-klopp-transformed-liverpool) which currently exists in his squad. There are plenty of other centre-back alternatives out there rather than taking a risk with Semedo.
