# Liverpool made enquiry for Virgil van Dijk near the end of the summer

Liverpool did indeed make another effort to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton near the end of the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed by Paul Joyce, writing for the [Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/nerveless-joe-gomez-provides-antidote-to-liverpools-virgil-van-dijk-woe-2fz35297w), that the Dutchman was the subject of another tentative enquiry from the Reds, as they proceeded to rebuild a relationship with Saints.

The report states that Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, “built bridges behind the scenes” with Saints’ chairman Ralph Krueger during the transfer window.

This led to the question of Van Dijk’s availability being raised once again following the Netherlands international’s decision to hand in a transfer request at St Mary’s.

The answer from Saints’ chiefs remained the same though, and the ex-Celtic man was forced to stay at the club.

Liverpool are still keen to land Van Dijk in January, Joyce reports, and it’s stated that Jurgen Klopp feels a certain degree of loyalty towards the defender after the move in the summer broke down.
