# Liverpool open contract talks with Caoimhín Kelleher

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/16/liverpool-fans-jordan-henderson-rubbishes-rift-rumours-alisson-robertson/) have reportedly opened up contract negotiations over a new contract with Irish goalkeeper [Caoimhín Kelleher](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/12/12/caoimhin-kelleher-quiz-liverpool/), according to the [Irish Examiner](https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/arid-40227539.html).

The Cork-born stopper was thrust into the limelight earlier this season when [Alisson Becker was ruled out](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/alisson-out-liverpool-champions-league-ajax-injury-caoimhin/1siqntht7bu9n1upksn8n6qstu) with injury and the 22-year-old gave a [superb account of himself](https://www.sofascore.com/player/caoimhin-kelleher/827362).

On the back of those impressive performances, the Reds are keen to secure Kelleher’s long-term future at the club with just [17 months remaining](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/caoimhin-kelleher/profil/spieler/340918) on his existing deal. With [10 Republic of Ireland under-21 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/caoimhin-kelleher/nationalmannschaft/spieler/340918/verein_id/3509) to his name and [nine for the Reds’ first team](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/caoimhin-kelleher/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/340918), Kelleher seems to have a bright future ahead of him.

Following the youngster’s [Champions League debut](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/418311-caoimhin-kelleher-reaction-afc-ajax-champions-league) in a pivotal encounter with Ajax in December, [Jurgen Klopp lauded Kelleher](https://www.fotmob.com/news/1cqhl6222wgjr1g6dx0m6j4o3p/klopp-praises-'top-talent'-kelleher-after-liverpool-clean-sheet) as a ‘top talent’ after he had kept a clean sheet in place of Alisson and having been picked ahead of previous deputy Adrian.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Tying down Kelleher is a wise move by Liverpool as the Irishman has enjoyed perhaps a [breakthrough in his career](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/liverpool/caoimhin-kelleher-goalkeeper-wolves-result-b1767259.html) this season, which could attract attention from elsewhere.

Whilst it’s difficult to foresee a situation whereby he regularly ousts Alisson, who despite [recent costly errors](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55875683) remains one of the [best in the world](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/alisson-becker-the-secrets-behind-the-worlds-best-goalkeeper/1ttghp56qbzjz123c20o55udze#:~:text=Alisson%20Becker%20has%20had%20quite,finals%20of%20the%20Champions%20League.) in his position, Klopp understands more than most the value of having a high-quality reserve goalkeeper as the Brazilian number one seems to [miss a high volume of matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alisson/verletzungen/spieler/105470).

Despite his seemingly [ready-to-go ability](https://www.football365.com/news/klopp-kelleher-usurp-adrian-liverpool-ajax), Kelleher may need to bide his time before becoming the main man at Anfield whilst Adrian is [expected to leave](https://www.90min.com/posts/adrian-possible-liverpool-exit-january-transfer-deadline) in the summer, but securing his future would certainly be a wise move by the Reds.
