# Liverpool open talks to sign Kalidou Koulibaly

Liverpool have opened talks with Napoli over a potential deal to swoop in ahead of Manchester United and sign defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports in [Italy](https://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/serie-a/tmw-liverpool-matip-e-in-odore-di-cessione-la-priorita-e-kalidou-koulibaly-1377774).

Liverpool are apparently interested in signing the 28-year-old star, but the current global situation may dictate if they are able to spend much in terms of transfers this summer.

Even so, it looks like the Reds are still doing their due diligence on targets, hence the reported discussions about Koulibaly.

Napoli’s reported asking price of close to £100m, if that is accurate, likely makes this potential transfer a complete non-starter.

Even without the massive financial issues that the Reds are likely to face due to the ongoing global situation, I’m not sure they’d be looking to spend £100m on a centre back, given that they already splashed the cash to sign Virgil van Dijk.

Added to that, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren give Liverpool a strong stable of central defenders and it’s difficult to see the Reds looking to spend such a big fee to add another.

Liverpool fans will be all to aware of how good Koulibaly is, given his perdromances against the Reds in the Champions League in recent seasons and many of them would likely be keen to sign the Senegalese star.

However, I’d be very, very, very surprised to see the 28-year-old arriving at Anfield next season, unless it’s as an opposition player again.
