# Liverpool ponder move for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam

Liverpool are keeping a close eye on the situation of Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam after contract extension talks between the player and his club stalled, with his current deal set to expire in 2018, according to a report on [CalcioMercato](https://www.calciomercato.com/en/news/juventus-and-liverpool-eye-bargain-transfer-of-napoli-star-as-co-78891).

The Merseyside club were linked with a move for Ghoulam in the summer transfer window but no official approaches were made. The player is reportedly keen to sign a new contract but his super-agent Jorge Mendes is negotiating a release clause for the deal.

Mendes wants the release clause to be around €18m but his club believe that to be too low and want to set it at €30m.

The 26-year-old has various clubs keeping an eye on his situation, with Serie A giants Juventus also interested.

Napoli were initially keen to offload the Algerian, but decided to keep the full-back, who has been a key component of their side for the last couple of years.

The extension must be signed before January or Ghoulam would be available for a free transfer, which is why Napoli want to agree the deal as quickly as possible.
