# Liverpool should have sold Origi over Brewster, claims Thompson

Liverpool made a mistake deciding to get rid of Rhian Brewster over Divock Origi, according to Phil Thompson.

Brewster has [completed](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/oct/02/sheffield-united-agree-club-record-deal-to-buy-liverpool-rhian-brewster) a permanent switch to Sheffield United, while Origi has stayed put at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window.

Speaking to *[Paddy Power](https://news.paddypower.com/)*, via the *[Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8823477/Liverpool-sold-Divock-Origi-instead-Rhian-Brewster-summer-says-Phil-Thompson.html)*, former Liverpool captain Thompson spoke of his disappointment at the club’s decision:

> On the outgoings, I’m disappointed that they decided to let Rhian Brewster go. I’d like him to have stayed.

> I can see some of the reasons why, but if you were asking me whether to go with Brewster or Divock Origi, for me, it’d be Origi going.

> There’s not too many forwards that have the aggression that Brewster has.

> There’s a couple of others that could have gone, Xherdan Shaqiri for example could’ve brought a few quid in.

I think it was always going to be a tough decision when it came to Brewster’s future, with first team opportunities so hard to come by.

For Liverpool to receive a bid of £23.5million for someone who has never played a Premier League game was almost too good to turn down, however, especially with a buy-back clause included.

While Brewster is arguably a more exciting option than Origi with greater potential, there was no guarantee that he would make the step up.

Meanwhile, the Belgian appears content with playing a squad role, chipping in from the substitutes’ bench, when required.

Origi’s past impact is undeniable, with so many huge goals scored, but Liverpool do need him to show far more consistency if he is to earn regular playing time. He has only [scored once](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/GoalsPerSeason/1276-129) in the league in 2020.

[Diogo Jota](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1373) and [Takumi Minamino](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1363) now look stronger choices from the bench, with the pair appearing in five league games between them this season, compared to Origi’s [zero](https://www.lfchistory.net/players/player/profile/1276).
