# John Aloisi says David Alaba is ‘exactly what’ Liverpool need

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/12/lawrenson-urges-liverpool-to-play-phillips-and-kabak-v-leicester/) should be going everything they can to sign Bayern Munich defender [David Alaba](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/05/liverpool-transfer-boost-david-alaba-favours-premier-league-move/), according to [Optus Sport](https://sport.optus.com.au/articles/os20378/liverpool-analysis-signings-dortmund-klopp) pundit John Aloisi.

The Reds [have been linked](https://twitter.com/cfbayern/status/1351467360654340106?s=20) with the [soon-to-be out-of-contract](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-alaba/profil/spieler/59016) Austrian, although there is [major competition from Real Madrid](https://www.espn.com/soccer/real-madrid/story/4311237/real-madrid-favourites-to-sign-bayerns-alaba-chelsea-unwilling-to-match-players-wages-sources).

Aloisi, who [played in the Premier League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-aloisi/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/7741) for Coventry, described the 28-year-old as ‘exactly what’ Liverpool need as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad in the summer. The Australian told [Optus Sport](https://sport.optus.com.au/articles/os20378/liverpool-analysis-signings-dortmund-klopp):

> For next season, I would go and sign (David) Alaba from Bayern Munich. He is going to be on a free, I’m not sure if he’s already agreed with Real Madrid, what a player he is.
>
> He is exactly what they need in terms of that centre-back, left-footed, can defend forward, when there’s space in behind he is so quick he can get back in.

Liverpool were said to be [interested in a host of central defenders](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12176302/liverpools-centre-back-targets-who-could-reds-buy-in-january) in what was a January transfer window reminiscent of Groundhog Day in many respects. They eventually signed [Ben Davies](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpool-complete-16m-davies-signing-preston/x6ejltp2d7qo1thfn8ze2dpq4) and [Ozan Kabak](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12205717/ozan-kabak-transfer-liverpool-agree-deal-for-schalke-centre-back-as-arsenal-defender-shkodran-mustafi-set-to-join-bundesliga-club) on transfer deadline day to appease their defensive woes.

However, with Davies’ [capabilities at elite level unknown](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-davies/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/257097), and with Kabak currently only [signed until the end of the season](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12206006/ozan-kabak-transfer-liverpool-sign-schalke-centre-back-on-six-month-loan-with-option-to-buy), Klopp could still be in the market for another defensive solution in the summer.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Alaba isn’t necessarily [known for his rapid pace](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/39722/Show/David-Alaba), so for Aloisi to pinpoint that as an area of strength comes as a surprise.

However, it’s the [experienced Austrian international’s](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-alaba/nationalmannschaft/spieler/59016/verein_id/3383) versatility which may further entice Klopp to at least try and bring him to Anfield. Adept at left-back and in central defence, the 28-year-old has proved his capabilities in numerous positions time and again.

During Bayern’s [FIFA Club World Cup final triumph](https://www.skysports.com/football/bayern-munich-vs-tigres/440906), in which the Bavarian side took Liverpool’s world champions tag, Alaba was [utilised as a holding midfielder](https://www.skysports.com/football/bayern-munich-vs-tigres/teams/440906) in front of a back four.

Given the [injury woes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/ausfallzeiten/verein/31) which have befelled the Reds this season, as well as the Austrian’s [glittering CV](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-alaba/erfolge/spieler/59016), it’s no surprise that Aloisi has so strongly championed him as an ideal signing for the Anfield club.
